Mangrove Swamp sump

Ok, I know this is a bit out there, and I would probably never do it as I know that chaeto is better... However was at Agway the other day picking up my 100g sump, and they had the shallower stock tank version (35g I think) that is fairly wide. Looked at it, and thought "Would be interesting to make a shallow mangrove root sump out of that." Then was watching a show on the Equator this weekend, and they were talking about mangrove swamps being great places for frye/shrimps/etc. Seems like it would be an interesting take on a sump/refugium as well as a conversation piece to do.

You should take a look at a new mangrove tank they have in the NEAq Jellyfish area. It's a very cool mangrove lagoon. (although I expect the mangroves are fake). I think it's a visually cool idea, but might be hard to implement because mangroves grow SO DANG SLOWLY!!

There's a guy in arizona I think who won RC TOTM about 2 years ago (he had an L-shaped tank with a fish room behind it) and in his fishroom he had two stocktanks, one over the other, with mangroves in one and another refugium (I think for fish and frags and stuff) below that. You should look it up.

Cool! Thanks for the tip. Probably never do it as can never seem to find cheap mangroves roots, lol.

A while ago Marco at Fishy Business got a whole load of them for really cheap. I'm not sure if that was a one-time chance, or if it's a source he could order from again. Might check with him. The ones I got from him did great for as long as I had them (about a year, I think) but they only grew about 6 inches. Some of the branch roots were over a foot though. :)

I couldn't find a buyer for the ones I had, ended up donating for the auction

If you decide to setup the sump keep an eye on Magnesium, the mangroves use it a lot and you'll probably have to supplement.

I can get mangroves from my friend in Tampa. He sells them to me cheap, like $5 a piece.
