Maxspect Gyre 150

So I have been running the new pump for more than a week now and like it alot.
Willing to answer questions if anyone is on the fence about getting one.
I have a 4x2 tank footprint and am running it horizontally on one end about 8" under the surface. I am using reversing gyre mode.

Ok...tomorrow. What do you want me to show?

would like to see how it changes from forward to back , right under the pump and end to end . I think I might get one of those soon

I took out my MP40 and an MP10 on my Elos and replaced them with the Gyre....and so far, I love it.... We have had them in for a bit now...and they have been selling well. This pump is getting flow into areas that have never seen flow in that tank before. And the best part for me, is that it is putting a TON of flow exactly where I need it! Across the entire top level of my tank where my SPS are. You should see the polyp movement we are getting from top to bottom in that tank. I have it on pulse mode at 30%. and the Fish and Corals are loving it....much more natural (Ocean) flow than any other pumps or combo of pumps I have used before. I do have some long term concerns about them...but only time will tell. They do come with some replacement parts to keep maintenance on point.

I replaced 2 tunzes. I don't plan to get rid of them just in case.

What are your thoughts about running it vertically in the corner of a tank?
How is the noise level?

Also (for B), what are some of the long term concerns?

I think vertical would work fine, though I have not tried it. Forward flow is very strong so the wall you put it on will need to be clear or everything will get blasted. This pump had blown glued frags off my rocks.
I am running it at 30% and cannot hear it unless I put my head right next to it. It has a high pitch humming sound. My Tunzes were silent so this is an adjustment for me.
I hear it is louder at more power but have not tried it.

Long term concerns are bearing wear and small snails getting in and causing damage. There isn't much clearance between paddles and cage, so anything intruding could break paddle blades.

How has your experience been with the alternating mode? What cage configuration are you using? I had A/B, but realized it wasn't really doing anything in reverse, so I've been trying B/B. That's pretty cool, but it seems like it's really hard to get a reverse gyre going since gravity is fighting against it. And if I crank the power up more, I fear it will cause a rip in space/time and push my sand in to another dimension.

I started with constant stream and boy there is nothing like that regular forward gyre. Wow. I haven't tried pulse mode yet though. I should switch batch to A/B and give that a shot. A lot of people seem to be happy with that.

I am running the A/B with reversing. Reverse really only blows a small area diagonally under the pump, which works for my layout so its ok for me.

Went and saw the one B has on his tank today . it really is nice I want to see one on a bigger tank and see what it can do . But so far it is on my wish list for after the holidays

I have been afraid to do the different paddle combo with reverse gyre because the manual says something about it could cause the pump to walk

I think you'd only have to worry about the pump walking if you had it really cranked up or had really thick glass. I've got 1/2" glass and had it doing 50% forward/40% reverse and it seemed completely stable. It's easy enough to change the paddles, so I'm thinking maybe I'll just run B/B in alternating mode as part of routine maintenance to ensure there is no detrius buildup anywhere. I think I'm going to try sticking with pulse for the majority of the time.

@reefstarter: Not sure how big B's tank is. I have a 5x2x2 150 and I've not turned it up higher than 50% for fear of traumatizing my tank inhabitants. And there really is not a dead spot anywhere in tank, even throughout the rock work. It's amazing.

How do they seal the motor? my biggest worry is the seals wear out and leak water inside the motor. Thanks

Hmm. I'm coming from Tunze's, so I didn't really give it much thought. I don't think it's any more prone to leak issues that any other submerged pump. Imagine a regular pump but the impeller goes all the way through to the other side. The impeller has shafts on both ends.

I definitely hope these things hold up from a quality perspective because the initial performance is out of this world. I'm optimistic given how pleased I've been with the Maxspect Razr light I got for my frag tank a while ago. So far I have a lot of respect for Maxspect.

.

That is not what direct drive motor means.
Gyre is the only one ever put a direct drive motor under saltwater. No one else in the history dare to do that and survived to tell the tale.

I believe so but just worry about the motor.
