Mesh Mod on Octopus NWB-110 (2009)

I bought a Octopus skimmer from Jay's a couple of months ago. The performance is okay but nothing to rave about. I decided to mesh mod it. Another reefer encouraged me to do it so I went to meshmod.net and got the stuff. I cut the pins off, drilled eight holes and have installed three layers of mesh and zip ties. I'm not sure I like it. Sure, there's more flow and finer bubbles but it's hard to adjust even with gate valve mod. I either get too wet green tea water or nothing at all. At nothing at all I can see the dry frothy foam I want but it's just not getting high enough to spill over. My question is: Is there going to be an additional break in period due to the change?

You sound like exactly what I am going thru with my EuroReef. How does your water look? I was told theres nothing in my water to skim, and I am starting to believe it. I have done everything to this, and I still get nothing.

Good Luck Derek

Yup, I ordered a spare pin wheel, just incase. I was only getting about an inch of dark green tea water a week out of it before, my water is crystal clean and my corals look great and are growing. This hobby is definiately for those with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. We just can't leave things well enough alone. We're always looking to go the "the next level" when everything looks great.

What is the water depth you have in your sump. You should have about 8" of water, if the level is higher it will decrease the performance significantly. You can also raise the skimmer up in the sump with a platform if the water height is an issue.

I have a mesh wheel in my Eshopps (standard on the Gen. II) and let me tell you, all I have is rock and sand, no livestock yet, still cycling, and I get the 1/4 filled (to the drain tube) once every day or two and it's a black tea coloration with plenty of gunk in it and the inner tubing gets a nasty crap brown colored layer that I clean everyday, so i'd say mesh wheels work great. =] And I have to agree that this hobby is great for people with OCD (raises hand). I've been diagnosed. Lol.

Only issue I have is that theres a scratch on the front panel of my tank. My little cousin keyed a star the size of a half dollar in the top left corner. Little punk.
