Mesh-mod people

I currently have a CPR Bak Pak Reef 2 on my 55 gallon.
I've been reading a lot about doing mods to these to get more efficiency.
Anyway the skimmer has the stock Rio 600 on it right now.
I know there's been a lot of complaints about this pump in the past but it seems to be working ok.Takes a wrap on the side to get it started sometimes when unpluged.
Anyways,I have a spare maxi-jet 1200 and I bought a spare 1200 impeller last week.I was thinking of doing the gutterguard mod like in this thread.
Already have the gutter guard.BTW..stuff stinks for using in gutters.

Any ideas,experiences or comments would be great.

You've got a spare 1200 impeller, that's a good thing just in case. A dremel is a handy tool and don't forget the safety glasses. I'm thinking if 1/16 holes were drilled on the impeller to run the fish line thu. I use 12lb test and a #26 needle for mesh mods. Any time is always a good time provided you take your time.

Would you cut away as much as the guy did in his mod?
Seems to mee that the magnet pulls the impeller spindle in pretty far and makes some room.How many layers of gutter guard is the norm?
