mixed salt water

How much salt water do people have on hand at any one time. I have a small (29) gal tank that has been neglected for a while. My water changes have been few and far between. The livestock look good but not as good as the algae and cyano. I feel like my search for reasonably priced distilled water is my hold up but I only by about 5 gallons at a time. Can I mix 30-ish gallons ahead of time in a big trash barrel and keep a pump in it simply adding salt and water when it gets low?

Sure can!I keep about 1/4 my tank volume on hand at all times.FYI you can get r/o water from allot of LFS's for reasonable prices.

I keep 30+ gallons at all times... usually, when my 2nd bin is clear (rock curing now) i have 60+... jus in case, cuz you jus never know ;) lol

I guess my question is how log can you store salt water without adverse effects? I usually have a good 10 -15 gallons...

this question comes up alot... if its sealed/covered properly, AND CONSTANTLY circulated and aerated, i will let mine go months and have... i have some of the same water in my barrel now that has been there for months as i never use it all at one time, then i jus add more RO water and salt as i go... its said that certain plastics can leach things into your water, but im not sure how true that is, as there is no scientific proof i believe... though, its always good to rinse it once every few months i would imagine... maybe i will do that sometime lol

ya know, i mean, its water... as long as its stored properly, what could possibly happen to it?

im not asking the question back to you CPS, im jus making an question sort of statement...

gotcha. thanks for the info.

i didnt really give you a whole lot of info really at all... i am simply saying, without some serious scientific backing, im not gonna believe it could go "bad"...

however, a persons own peace of mind and husbandry practices, are far more important than my own opinion on this matter... so jus do what you feel is right, and will work for you, and all is well :)

I see no reason to keep RODI water on hand as it can be made readily, for me at least.

Personally, I only keep as much saltwater and kalkwasser top-off to last me a month. I know kalkwasser will lose its effectiveness over time but not sure about made-up saltwater.

I keep my new sw mix circulating in a 30 gallon brute barrel. I always leave the lid cracked open a little. Is it better to keep it completely covered? I think my reasoning behind keeping it cracked a little is to allow proper gas exchange or whatever, kinda like what bagged fish experience.
