My electric bill was $500.00 per month for the last 2 months.....but it is usually not that high. Typically my electric runs from $300 to $400 per month for a 300 gallon tank, 150 gallon sump, 30 gallon frag tank and 50 gallon refugium. The main pump, a Dolphin 9600 (10,000 gph) alone draws 9.6 amps or close to 1.2 kw. The 1800 W of MH adds to the misery....but it brings out the nice colors of the SPS corals. The rest is the water chiller and the central A/C and the 5000 BTU A/C that cools down my fishroom.

Although I just got 3 - 400W MH, So that's not gonna help..
And I need 2 more pumps for the 300 for my 2 closed loops...*shutters*
Food Expense...$100/mon
New Equiptment and Livestock $500-$1,000/mon
In total I now have between all my tanks around 1,000lbs of LR.
So i spend $1,000-$1,500/mon on fish stuff.....*faints*
I never added it up till now...

Some of you big dogs should think of slaming a turbine in the back yard!!! 
500.00 a month!!!! A windmill will pay for itself very quickly. I read in national geographic this month that they will be windmills on the market for the consumer in the very near future. (couple years) They are a little $ to setup initially but they claimed with escalating energy costs, they could pay for themselves in two years. with a monthly bill of 5 beans I can't see how that would not be possible.

I am really considering them...figure $6000/yr on electricity x 3 yr's $18,000 and it's just gonna go up... I need to move to a place like tauton that has it's own plant and subisidizes power for the town...they pay like $30/mon during the summer...

Ive got a 75gal tank with sump and 460 watts of light above. I do run Tunze streams which do save alot of usage but I still figure the monthly cost to be 60-70 dollars.
What I want to know is how much does it cost monthly for my RO unit to produce 100 gallons of RO water??

Yes look for a town with a town owned power and light company. We live in Littleton MA and our entire utility bill averages about $400 per month. That is the lighting, heat in the winter, water ( from a well) and cooling for tanks and the air in the summer. Afraid to see what it would be in the other towns around us.

Light Tubes
Another option is to add light tubes to supplement your lighting. If there is sun, and thus a supplemental source, you could turn off some or all of your lighting. You could automate this using a light meter, an electronic interface, and X-10 control. The only catch is you need to get the tubes from your tank to the outside of your roof with a minimum number of "bends". I was looking into this but found it would be impractical on my tank on the first floor of my split due to the number of bends required in the tubes.
