Today i came from work .all my corals was close .my fish acting desperate .so i knew somthing was wrong .so i open the stand doars and inmediately feel that heat ! Look at my termometer 92 degree .look at one of my heaters and still on .. so i took it out .put a fan turn on the a/c at the living room and is cooling down .mayority of fish and corals look ok . but one of my anthias still stress out .. hoping for not to loos any thing ...

Sorry to hear that. To avoid this situation running a fan along top of the water helps a great deal when combating heat. This should help you out big time and it's the cheapest. id make it routine until summer is over. Best of luck.

That's sucks hopes everything works out. From the sound of it the controller went on the heater and it got stuck on!! Yikes for future always run your heater on an additional controller (rkl etc..) So that the outlet it is plugged into will physically be off.

Diferent control for the heather sounds good .. well i belive is just something i let it happen know i remember i was runing just one .but was about to go to puerto rico on vacations for 18 days so i let my ac on all the time .. i decide to put an extra heater but notice that on a lower setting it goes on ! and it was exacly the same as the one i was runing .so it was no reason to go on on a lower setting . and after several minutes i get it to work .or turn on when the old one was on .but never get it to work on the same setting on the gadge than bring on the head of the heater .. as the old one was ! So caind of my fault . some times preventing something to happen we make it worst !

At the very least grab an Azoo Micro temp controller. Very simple, but will prevent this from happening in the future. They read in °C, so I usually do 25°, which is 77°F.

man thats rough . I feel your pain in dealing with heat . this time of year I pull my heaters out of the sump all together . good time to give them a cleaning . this year I won't be putting them back either . in another thread I said I was going to switch my tank heating needs over to my boiler . that happens this weekend

We spend hundreds in live stock and a Reef Keeper Lite only cost $119. It will take care of your heaters and a fan if you add one. Plus many more things.

^^^This.

I own a $119 RKL and it literally only controls my heater and a fan for me, and it is worth every penny.
What brand of heater? IMHO if it isn't Eheim or Cobalt heaters, I don't trust it.

I have my heater turn on at 77.6 degrees and off at 77.7 and the fan turns on at 77.8 degrees. You can play with numbers to save more electricity (my bills are low enough) but you get the idea.
My tank never swings more than 0.2 degrees in any direction.

That being said, I also have central air so unless a heater was stuck (which can't happen with an RKL) the tank would even without a fan never exceed roughly 78 degrees.

For those that aren't afraid to DIY, you can easily make a controller that will do heating and cooling for $20-30 depending on how fancy you want to make it. The controller I use is a STC-1000. That plus wiring is all you need. You can put it in a hobby box if you want, but not necessary. I have 3 of them in use right now.

Just bought one... This will resurrect all my old heaters where the controller failed. I always wanted something like this but wasn't going to spend $150 on a controller for it. A little b-day present to me!

mine hit probably around 89 last week when i didnt put the fan back on the sump after some maintenance had it blowing on the floor in front of stand.. stupid. so far no adverse effects noticed.
92 is beyond the higher end of the temp swings you ever want to see. few weeks ago the reefkeeper probe was reading wrong and had the heater going.
i learned that in the summer i will never need the heater on so i just unplug it. cant go on that way!!!
good luck.

Any equipment can fail at any time.

I have 6 RKL. All working for 2-3 years. No one failed ever. I also have an Apex because I can control things remotely.

A heater can get stuck and continue working. The RKL or any of the ones suggested from Amazon in previous postings can fail too.

But, if you have a good heater set up to, lets say 78-79 F plus you have the RKL set up to the same temp (79 F), then you have there a double temp control. Do I explain myself ? The probability that both fail are really reduced.

But !!!! ..... if you use the RKL , or any other controller as the ONLY control of your heater (like those heater bars, that work continually) then you increase your risk. You took out the benefit of a controller like the RKL. Redundancy in this case is increased security.

But again, there is always a small chance that the heater control and the RKL (or any other) fail at the same time........ that's life.

Best

Ps : in my SPS tank I have an Apex and a RKL. Lights, pumps, doser and heater in the DT are connected to it. The fuge is in another room. Has lights, Fans and more heaters. Those are connected to a RKL.

When an Acro frag or mini-colony can cost you something between $ 25- 100 or a fish $30, 50 or 100 + . Then you see an Apex not so expensive and a RKL as buying another good Acro.
