My reef is dying

the 120G tank + 75G fish + 30G fuge system

Rebuild

Armando,

Again. I am really sorry to hear of this terrible event. :(
Please let me know when you rebuild. I will gladly give you a frag of every colony in my tank that is large enough to frag.

Please let me know what else I can do, if anything. :o

i lost many of my nicest sps corals and clams last summer.....partially due to the heat and.....it took me forever to figure it out----PHOSPHATES!!
the fish were not effected, nor the snails, nor the shrimp......it only takes your nicest corals......

That is horrible

I feel for you Armando....Brings back memories I would like to forget forever. I wonder if your problem was high organics. I know you went to a barebottom tank a while ago & I'm just curious if not having the sandbed could have been the culprit. Many reefers are trying this way & their claims are that the system becomes nutient poor with a barebottom. I just think there is so much benificial bacteria that is lost when a system is switched to BB ...I'm not a huge fan of it. Anyway.....I know a lab where you can send a sample of your water to for analysis if you are interested. Let me know. The cost for an organics test is about 40.00 plus shipping.
Thinking about it more I realize that this test might not be very accurate. With all the death in the tank recently your organics will be high. If you want the contact let me know. They also test other parameters in the ppb level & testing saltwater is their specialty. I had it done a while back & it cost a bit but I look back now & say it was worth every bit.
Good luck with which ever way you decide to take this. Give it some time for your depression to settle before considering ripping the whole system down.

dunno. still at work right now.

What a bummer Armando. What bad news to hear after I just got back from a week away from my tank. My wife got an A+ for here reef sitting duties. I would definitely like to know what the cause was. Are you sure it wasn't the whole seahare incident?

Hi Armando,
When I saw the title I was hoping it was a joke. Sorry to hear this is happening.
Just to let everyone know, Skiptons has a large, constantly mixing vat (I think it is a couple a hundred gallons) of salt water (tropic marin). I think the SG is 1.021.
I would be surprised that this was because of a bare bottom tank when a there was a fire in the sump. As sad as I am about your reef, I'm relieved that the stand and your apartment didn't catch fire.
Was this on a GFI circuit?

this is freaking unbelievable got home circuit breaker on the other system had tripped had sump overflow water on the floor good Lord.

on 120G LPSs are looking better, purple anemone is looking better. zoos look like cr@p. fish/inverts look OK. Most SPSs either bleached or RTNed.

I wish I could help in some way, all I have to offer are my best wishes for your tanks (and yourself, try to stay as calm as possible, easy to say hard to do I know but much more productive). Keep us posted on the status of your tanks and if you need anything post or PM. There are a lot of people here who want to help, let them if you need it!

Good luck Armando, don't let it get you down and you will be up as good as new in no time.

(some of the eys aren't worng on ths frng comuter eybord)

geesh armando! whats going on...your getting some of my luck! :) Hope if gets better for you.

Oh Armando, I just had a chance to read through this whole thread. I am so sorry. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help. The pink hammer frag you gave me a few months ago is getting pretty big - I could frag off a head for you. Why did the circuit breaker trip tonight? Maybe all of these "electrical issues" are related somehow? Now you have to tell your neighbor that you had another issue with the dishwasher again. ;)

Armando,

Let me know if there is anything I can do. It looks like a lot of people have already contacted you.

You have a frag of your choosing when you are ready to stock again.

Regards,
Joe

Almost afraid to ask.....how are things looking today????
tank looks like a post-war scene. i removed the SPS skeletons. bubble algae is growing all over. zoos still not open. xenia is melting. the SPSs i transferred to other tank are mostly bleached. i am hoping to save the blue polyp stylo, the lokani and a purple acro. i'm doing the 7th water change later and will leave it for now.
