I'm moving to a new house and just wondering if anyone thinks I need to take the sand out of my tank. Its a deep blue RR 65 gallon. Do you think I need to take the sand out. I have all the water out already all livestock is out and all live rock is out. Just wanted to know if I need to take the sand out. Its 60# of sand. Any advice would be great thanks. I'm only moving 15 minutes away and setting back up asap

I would just see it as a chance to replace all of the sand take it out and put new sand in with only couple scoops of old sand to seed it...IMO...or u could rinse it

My thoughts as well. Even if the sandbed is pretty healthy now, all the sloshing around from moving and refilling is likely to release a lot of accumulated waste and disrupt the anerobic bacteria. IMO it would be safer to restart the sandbed than to try to keep it intact.

I moved a 180 with sand in it. NEVER again! The weighe it adds is immense. I know your tank is smaller, but so is the glass thickness and durability. Its not worth destroying the tank.
Like the others said, look at it as an opportunity to clean/replace the sand

Thanks for all the help guys. I took the sand out. And have it in buckets. I upgraded my tank about 3 months ago so my sand isn't old or dirty. So I'm going to reuse the sand but I will be washing my some of my sand. Thanks again for the help

@3 months you should be good. If anything give it a fairly light rinse in RO water. As long as it isn't smelly or obviously full of crud I wouldn't be concerned.

sand is so cheap now too, 60 lbs of live aragonite sand is $50, comes with bacteria and no need to wash it.
