I just finished listening to part one, and it was fantastic! This interview reminded me of an old Reef Therapy episode with Jake and Mark, where they provided a straightforward yet entertaining explanation that debunked common misconceptions and shared valuable firsthand experiences. As Adam mentioned at the end, you're a great source of information and corals! The reef hobby definitely needs more quality podcasts like this. I'm looking forward to part two, thanks Dong!

Lots of great stuff in these two episodes. Both Dong and Adam have a wealth of knowledge and it’s really interesting to hear them discuss some of these topics. The best part of Beyond the Reef is always when they get into things that are fairly different between two very successful methods/farmers, and in these two episodes have a ton of that. Thanks for giving folks a lot to think about!

Oh man I am stoked to listen to these. I assume Adam will release them as podcasts as well. Always happy to hear experienced reefers talking shop!

As always Dong always have good tips about reefing. There is a new hype on CAC(catalytic activated carbon), especially among the reef moonshiners fb group. This is highly recommended among reefmoonshiners. Many claimed it helped lower their Sac254 measurement and have crystal clear water.. Sac254 is an added measurement in Oceamo ms test, which measures dissolved organic carbon in the water. . This CAC is super pricey compare to the normal activated carbon. What is your take on this @dz6t?

That UV testing at 254 nm wavelength has not much value to determine organic content in reef tank water. Not even close.
For example, ozone can make the water a lot clear and lower 254 nm absorption, but ozone doesn’t not remove organic compounds from the water, it simply oxidizes some colored compounds and makes them “less colorful”, but those compounds still stay in the water.

The brand that “method” recommends, the one and only brand, is simply a type of highly activated carbon manufactured by steam activation of select coconut shell charcoal.
It is meant to for devices such as RODI, which water only passing through once, to remove chlorine etc from FRESH water.
In saltwater tank, well, the story can be quite different as the water is loaded with all sorts of organic and inorganic compounds.

As DOC suddenly becomes the public enemy of this hobby is highly unwarranted. Coral reefs need certain DOC and not all DOC are bad for coral, not even close.
The truth is, there are/were thousands of beautiful reef tanks in the past three decades that do not and did not care about DOC, do not and did not follow certain “methods”. I think we need to take back the hobby as a hobby, an art form for our enjoyment.

While we are on “methods”, there are many ways to keep successful and beautiful reef tanks.
IMO:
The reasons to follow a method are
1. You enjoy doing it, and you can afford to do it
2. The method fits your lifestyle

Otherwise, just simply following the FREE methods such as doing water change, dose Two parts etc, then sit back and relax to enjoy the hobby.

In plain english DOC is all organic matter in the water?

Yes. It simply means organic matter that dissolved in the water.

Many environmental studies of DOC that affecting coral are focusing on chemicals come from man made pollution, DOC releases by algae etc, which may not apply to reef tanks.

The kinds of DOC in coral reefs can be very different from the kinds of DOC in reefs tanks, as DOC in reefs tank mostly come from fish waste, fish and coral food, chemical warfare from coral.

Excellent comments about salt choice, nutrient balance, what corals can consume. Overall a terrific listen. I am excited to check out part 2.

I use normal instant ocean since I dont want the super high alk of reef crystals. But maybe if the stability is worth the minor alk spike during water changes it is worth switching.

Also great info on what the brown film is in your mixing container, and fun to hear that it may be best to just blast it off the walls and feed it to the tank.

The alkalinity of purple instant ocean salt is not necessarily lower, I found it various from batch to batch.
The latest batch I tested is as high as Reef Crystals.
