i saw a bunch of them at Jay's couple days ago. love 'em but too bad they're not reef safe.

where did you get him from he is awesome.

Jay's in Salem

How big of tank is he in?
230 gal

wow good luck, nice healthy looking specimen, but fatten him up would ya? =)

I'm trying my best. So far he has taken in some larger Mysis (PC Mysis) and I have been watching him graze on LR particularly targeting a couple small sponges which have grown on and around the LR.

I am cautiously optimistic. I feel similar to when we purchased the Copper Banded. For one, he seems well adjusted already swimmingly around calmly and inquisitively.

Thanks for the positive feedback

Is it tank raised or wild...they were some tank raised ones out there local...

the TR will eat prepared foods...

Nice fish!
Cool to see someone buck the trend - of not keeping them. I have an aquarium keeping book from the 1950's (out on loan), but the highly experienced author claimed that these are amongst the easier fish to keep captive. Oddly, today it is recommended to not keep them.
A friend has had one for a while and I think it ate most of his zoanthids...

Update

Quick update for those who were curious.

After a little over 3 months I am very pleased to announce the beauty is still alive and presumably well, based upon visible dietary habit.

He/she remains a veracious connoisseur of:

  • Nori (hanged from lettuce clip), usually side by side with the Tangs
  • small Mysis shrimp
  • Reef Formula (RDF) 1 and 2,
  • Clam (also hanged from lettuce clip)
  • chopped Squid
  • and believe it or not Flake Food (precisely, Ocean Nutrition's Prime Reef Flakes) ::
Cheers

Not so new Moorish Idol

Specimen introduced to DT on February 27th, 2010. The below Picture was taken this past week. I am grateful to have been able to observe it for the past 5 months. <fingers still crossed>

keep up the good work.

5 months is definitely good news, but as far as i remember you're never really out of the woods with these fish and how delicate they are..

I agree. It requires constant diligence and a lot of luck. All too often I don't believe they last this long.

If this was one of those that came from the vendor who was getting baby fry out in the wild & feeding them until they were big enough to sell you won't have a problem. The specimens that are caught as adult wild are the ones that usually don't survive.. (one in every 30 or 40 might make it with alot of work & prayer.. FWIW...I beleive that vendor who had the fry set up went out of business...so either way...luck is on your side

Bump - Update

I was trying to hold-off until 1-year, but as we are approaching 11 months in our DT this beauty has never looked better. I feel so fortunate to have been able to house such a supposedly delicate species for nearly a year. I am finally at the point where I am not constantly worrying about her survival. I am going to just keep doing what I have been ;)

Perhaps wondering if food is about to appear
