nitrite with sps

ok so i have this friend that keeps saying that 1.0 nitrite is ok for sps. i keep telling him its not ok at all. they will just rtn. but he tells me that he has had acros and monti caps with that much nitrite and they did fine. what do you guys say. am i wrong

My understanding is the tank didn't cycle correctly if its showing nitrite cause its still processing ammonia. I could be wrong. But never heard it before.

thats what i told him but he has had his tank for over a year now. i told him he never let it cycle correctly

I believe you are more or less correct, I guess significant over feeding might also do it

Are you sure he is not mixing up nitrite and nitrate or maybe a bad test kit?

he has a brand new test kit. im very sure he is not mixing them up cuz he shows me the one hes talking about every time from my test kit cuz we have the same one. needless to say he wanted to through in his tank a red dragon acro. i called him crazy. then we went to a few lfs.

Something doesn't add up. You wouldn't be able to maintain a nitrite level. The bacteria would grow to consume it.

Nitrite is not really an issue in a reeftank/marine tank. and you shouldn't even bother testing it. As long as his nitrates are below 10 he is good to go.

Yes he will be fine and Nitrite testing in a marine aquarium is not needed. It is a "indicator" of where your initial nitrogen cycle is but after that cycle is complete it's a non issue.

Nope I am saying they do not matter in a reef/marine system, unlike the extreme toxicity of nitrite in a freshwater system.

But to your point yes he is most likely he is getting a false reading.

why would you even bother to test nitrite after the tank has been cycled.
I usually test for nitrite whenever I setup a new tank. Once the tank is cycled, I usually throw the test kit into the trash
