To me, this is a sign of the type of things going on in many areas. In a nutshell, the government has removed the industry lobbyists right out of the equation, but on the other end they appointed all kinds of people from environmental groups, which are essentially "intellectual enterprises", for which these people then lobby for......
WTF?

Hey Kevin,

You are pretty spot-on. I know a lot about this issue, and it is my career. I am not a fed, but a local scientist, not a lobbyist or a private "intellectual industry member" but I can tell you, objectively, that there was a severe need for effort reduction and re-focus in the NE fishing industry. I DO NOT like the way Lubchenco went about it. Catch shares could have been done right, they just rushed it way too much, and messed it all up and did some very unfair things in the process. Sound like Universal Healthcare? SAME SITUATION. Maybe presidents should serve one 8 year term and go on their way? I don't know the answer, but I sure know our government does not benefit from the vacuum and domination by one political party. Sometimes life is unfair, but as humans in a society we should try to make things as fair as we can. This was not the case here. Rushed, not well vetted and generally the mark of extremist politics.

My father is basically out of business as far as ground fishing goes(other than charters). He gave all his shares to my brother so he would be able to feed his kids. The big commercial fishing entities are buying up the shares from all the "little guys" that are being forced out of business also, creating somewhat of a monopoly.

that ought to have a great effect on pricing :(

So far fish prices have been moderate, as soon as the economy picks up though... hold on for a wild price gouging ride on some seafood delights.

I predict that with recreational license charges and quota-based management that the recreational fishing sector will influence management more in the future in our nation as a whole. By the way, it should. Joe public is the one entity that has fishing rights that is being stripped systematically. If you enjoy catching your own dinner from the sea wake up and stay informed, as you will need to fight for your share too!

I am likewise upset like Kevin, who has family that is still fishing, that owner-operators are getting squashed, because it is the owner-operators that I trust... not industrialized fishing that hires their own lobbyists... controls prices through market manipulation and hires the cheapest labor and pressures captains to produce, no matter what the cost in waste or bycatch would be. Takes the conscience out of fishing. Good luck Mr. Codfish!
