Resolution to mis-information on vendor bookings

Hi guys,
I met many of you today, and I hope you do not think we are posting this because we don't like the Boston Reefers! I actually had the pleasure of meeting and sending some of you home with some of our corals. However, there is a major (everyone has been talking about this ALL day!) issue with how the vendor contracts were handled, i.e. selling booth spaces as if they were indoor rentals (which all others MACNAs before were). I am one of the many livestock vendors as well as those premium vendors that have been placed into the "outdoor tents." All day the tents were blown open due to the wind, etc. From what we could see there are also a few other issues that should be handled off the boards regarding monitoring, etc.

Now...does this mean we are upset with BRS. Not directly, however, why were the livestock vendors (including myself) not told we would be put into an outdoor tent? Nothing is disclosed on the website, the contract, nor any materials that were provided to us, prior to taking funds for space rentals. I have done 5 other shows (Home & Garden Shows, Washington Boat Show, etc.) this year and this is definitely the first time I have ever shown up to an outdoor setting. If we were in a warm climate, and the tent was a secure setting, I would not have too much of a consideration. However, after hearing the negativity from so many other vendors today about how dissapointed they were, I felt this should be brought up (and we have a laptop). I would like to add that anything we had an issue with personally has been taken care of in a very professional manner! This is the only exception, and we are not the only ones concerned about our marine livestock. I guess the question for all of you would be...would you put your reef aquarium outside in a tent tonight? Tomorrow? I bring this up, for the livestock everyone is buying is coming from the vendor tanks that are outside...and I know many of us want all of those purchasing livestock to be happy, and that the species maintain captive durability. The temperature is 63 degrees right now at 11:30PM and expected to hit 55 by morning, and 52 the following morning. This unfortunately will cause issues with the livestock vendors, unless of course everything is good to go in the morning and everything sells through. Many people are thinking..."don't you guys use heaters?" and the answer is yes, however, I am sure nobody is thinking about the livestock vendors who had no clue they would be outdoors. Remember, without the vendors, there would most likely be no MACNA. So, I guess this answer is left up to BRS, MACNA, and Preferred Travel.

Also, many have you have seen the empty tank and tons of extra stuff we have sitting outfront of our booth...unfinished. Heading out of Maryland later than expected, we were late on arrival, but the reasons were totally out of our control...but we trekked on! We had originally planned on display 3 aquariums loaded with corals, frags, rock, etc. including a 120 gallon, and two 60 gallon proptanks. However, we have another small issue in that being the side of the tent that we are on, does not even have a concrete slab for a floor. Many joked the floor bounced when you walked on it, but that is because there are only 2x12s and sheets of plywood placed a floor! All of us know about "shoring up tanks" and making them level prior to filling. I am not willing to be responsible for a 120 gallon aquarium falling on any of the attendees or other vendors, so we decided with much regret not to fill the tank (which is fairly large) during the show. One of the hotel employees jokingly asked..."would you like us to put more plywood under the carpet for extra support?" Still trying to figure out how plywood is going to support 900+ lbs. per code.

I hope that none of the other vendors have any issues with their livestock, and the show turns out for the best, for it is great for the club, the hobby, and the industry as a whole. However, I really do think after hearing the ?s from other vendors and the issues that we too have had...that something be done by BRS to rectify the situation asap. Perhaps I am wrong, and please don't take this as a slight to the club. We are just very concerned about this for our booth, and those with livestock. I seriously doubt any of us would have been willing to sign those contracts, send funds, etc. if it were disclosed we would be outside the hotel itself.

nothing mentioned about outside here

The Hyatt Harborside at Boston's Logan International Airport is fully equipped with 19,000 square feet of meeting and banquet facilities. 13 of the 21 function rooms feature panoramic harbor views. Our 5,000-square-foot Grand Ballroom can accommodate up to 450 guests and the Harborside Pavilion and Midships Patio offer ideal venues for outdoor functions and events. All meeting rooms offer individual or master controls for heat/AC, sound, music, telephones, and high-speed Internet access.
*where are the individual heat/AC controls for the tents?

AquariaUSA,

I think your concerns are best served by contacting the MACNA committee (macna@bostonreefers.org), BRS officers (officers@bostonreefers.org) or BRS Board of Directors (bod@bostonreefers.org) directly. I hope it all works out.

Jim

Thanks Jim,
I am not sure if it's must my server but I sent an email to Emily and info@bostonreefers just in case...but they came back undeliverable. I just posted here to show our stance. Each of the members we have met were great, this is just an issue that is turning out to be the underlying current...and can be easily fixed (I think).

Thanks! :)

i hope it can be easily fixed....i hope no one loses anything due to being outside...

I'm HERE!!! Where are YOU!!?? Other BRS people??

I was there...and now I have to work. :-( I think I'm going to miss the rest of the show, including the dinner tonight...no fun at all!!

well how is/was it??? Not many reports coming in!

I thought it was great! Reefers everywhere. Tons of vendors...great speakers... I can sympathize with the issue AquariaUSA mentioned -- I was surprised to hear/see that livestock vendors were out in the tent; actually, I didn't even know the tent was going to be required. Hopefully those issues can be resolved to everyone's satisfaction. As a reefer though, it was great to be down there and I hope I can free up some time to head back down.

i was down there today and a ton of the vendors had big tanks set up under the tent. didn't really seem to be a problem. i actually kind of liked it outside. i talked to some of the vendors and they seemed to like the outdoors too. fresh air and a nice view of the water.

I was there this morning also, it was great, I wish I did not have to work so much this time of year (apple farming and all). It was amazing to see that many reefers in the same place. Sorry to Aquaria USA for your concern, I bought some stuff from you if it makes you feel any better :)

I found the $10 parking at the hotel and had a great day. I met a few people from out of town and they seemed to be having a good time as well. Thanks to everyone who worked this.

Hi guys! We were ok this morning, but a few others were not unfortunately. All in all I think the event has been fine thus far, just a few hiccups :) I think I must have met 20 or so of you guys so far, and have not met a finer group! Thus said...I would like to help get a frag swap going between you guys and www.cmas-md.org if you are interested. I think the easiest way to get it done is to try (this is always the hardest) to figure out who has what...and who wants what! So if you are interested...feel free to post ideas! Hasta manana....

We will have a nice selection of frags, and a few small colonies ready to go tomorrow, as well as the 120RR Envision acrylic and an AquaC EV-240 that has a crack on the riser tube (brand new, but cheaper due to crack). Hope everyone has fun on the last day!

I enjoyed my day at MACNA .. got some nice zoos from Jeremy(CRA) bought a nice piece of Solomon Rock from Pacific Aqua Farms and a nice Acro from them too! got some magazine subscriptions too! Didn't hear any speakers but I was watching Greg Hiller do his thang through the glass.. pretty cool... saw alot of the BRS nice too see familar faces :D Sherrie everytime we saw you you were running !! Bought a MACNA shirt from the bookstore ... Checked out a lot of equipment keeping up with the trade and what's new ...I liked the tent idea outside but wasn't to sure with temps outside if was accomadating to some vendors with live stock .. I saw a few tanks not doing to good .. But besides getting lost driving and walking great day! we couldn't leave Boston without hitting the NorthEnds Mike's Pastry Shop !!

I am so beat, and I didn't even do anything!!!

I saw some people working pretty hard so I thought I'd just thought it should be mentioned: special thanks to Paula manning the raffle ticket area and missing all of MACNA, Dawn and others at fragexchange teaching and giving away free frags to the crazy mobs, Gustavo for running around like a madman, Marvin for auctioning what seemed like endless amounts of donations (incredible), Emily who always seemed to be around busy helping and directing everywhere, Ron and Moe and Joe/Jess and all the crew who spent all their time getting this off the ground and making it a success. Also thanks to Richard for the ride home on Saturday, probably saved my corals. I probably left a ton of people out, no offense intended.

I had lots of fun attending lots of sessions. Highlights would be the Aquamedic tank, had to touch it twice not realizing it had no cover... and ended up with the 2nd or 3rd 2x250 + 2T4 light unit ever made from them, meeting random people like the guy from Melev's reef, getting a personal autograph from Julian on all 3 of his new books with some humorous remarks, eating one of the penguins at the NEAQ, and bargaining with Dr. Mac like a common street vendor. Best thing of all was the incredible HUGE deep blue acropora I got from Marineland... it is 100% RTN resistant and was FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My only complaint is that I spent way too much money once again, and I have to work tomorrow!

Yes it was a great day and thanks to all who made it possible! I wish I could have taken more time to look things over but with the kids that was not possible, though I did manage to sneak away from the wife and kids long enough to clean up the Walt Smith Acros at the end of the day, now I have to go through my tank and get rid of a few....um....alot of things to make room :D

awesome!!!

oh, and I picked up 3 pairs of clowns, 2 black/white from Jeremy @ CRA, and then a reg pair of false percs (I think?) & a Yellow (too tired to rack my brain) pair from the BRS memeber who won the 120g tank. There were dozens of clowns in the tank & he was giving them away. I think he stilltook maybe a dozen home.
Sweet raffle prize - close to $6k value!!!
I'm happy & tired, had a great time

Marv, where's my rics?? ;)
