Born and raised on Long Island , New York , Joseph spent much of his childhood exploring the local bays and Long Island Sound. Whether it was exploring the varied ecosystems, catching bait for a fishing trip or collecting specimens for his home aquaria, most of his activities were centered on the marine life Long Island has in great abundance. His pre-collegiate years focused on all aspects of science and biology while working at Capri Marina . The first two years of his college career were spent as a biology major at Nassau Community College while continuing to work full time as Dock Master at Capri Marina . He then transferred to Long Island University at Southampton College where he graduated with a BS in Marine Science. During his tenure at Southampton , Joseph was heavily involved with many marine programs, employed as a laboratory technician at the LIU Marine Science Center and participated in the fall 1985 and spring 1987 SEAmester program.
In 1987, Joseph was hired by the New York Aquarium as an Aquarist and was then promoted to Senior Aquarist. During his 8 years with the New York Aquarium, he pioneered live coral maintenance and propagation, and was involved in penguin and marine mammal care as well as educational program lecturing. Joseph played a central role in the design, construction and maintenance of filtration systems and exhibits up to 130,000 gallons capacity. The largest and most challenging project was the design and construction of the 22,000 square foot Discovery Cove Building which won the 1990 American Zoological Association's (AZA) Certificate of Achievement Award and the Certificate of Design Excellence from Print Casebooks. A majority of the 70 plus exhibits, filters and eco-habitats were designed and constructed in-house, assuring the quality and reliability needed while saving a small fortune.
In 1995 and through September 1997, Joseph joined the Okeanos Ocean Research Foundation as the Exhibits Director and continued his work under The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation (RFMRP) maintaining exhibits while designing and constructing new displays. These displays included freshwater and marine ecosystems and seal/turtle rehabilitation tanks. Joseph has consulted with public aquariums around the world including Sea World, Jenkinsons Aquarium, the New England Aquarium, Texas State Aquarium, Mystic Aquarium, as well as the National Aquarium in Baltimore, MD on system designs to successfully maintain and propagate stony and soft corals. As a contributing editor to Aquarium Frontiers Magazine, and sponsored by the Marineland Speakers Program, Joseph has presented lectures at local schools and many aquarium clubs throughout the United States and Canada . In addition to being referenced in several textbooks and magazines in the United States and Germany, Joseph has also been published in Aquarium Frontiers magazine and the Annual Conference Proceedings of the American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums(AAZPA). Today, Joseph is the Cofounder and General Curator of Atlantis Marine World, a state of the art 50,000 square foot public aquarium located on 3.2 acres in Riverhead, N.Y. His main responsibilities include exhibit design, fabrication, specimen acquisition and life support system design and maintenance. Atlantis Marine World also has the largest live coral display in North America which is currently the 4th largest in the world. He lives in Aquebogue , New York with his wife Ann and three sons Daniel, James and John, all of whom also work with Joseph at Atlantis Marine World.
