This is why I don't surf.
I agree with Mike on the 3000 gph challenge. I don't have a closed loop on my AGA 120 gal. I use all 4 returns as drains. (2) 1" and (2) 3/4" to feed my sump and then my Dolphin returns to my OM and the (4) 1" outlets and the 1" bypass come over the back of the tank. Even using all 4 returns as drains, and cutting all the teeth out of my overflow combs so they are essentially just weirs, I have a problem with the water level in my tank getting too high. I estimate I'm pushing about 2500 gph into the tank. Overflows just can't handle all that flow.
So the closed loop is definitely the best solution. You can use a small pump like a Iwaki or a little giant as your return from the sump. With the closed loop you can theoretically manage as much flow as you choose.
