? on mixing saltwater

So question if i had a 5 gallonbucket sealed with a powerhead mixing the salt water how long would the water. B good for could i leave it for 2 weeks mixing. I just wanna havesome spare water around so i can autotopoff myself. Thank you

you want to topoff with RODI water not mix salt water.adding mixed water will raise your salinity

Hello you should also check stored water water for any odors or a flim that will develope in your container that your using because it will cause a algea bloom or breakout even with power heads hth don

I thought I recently read in a randy Holmes-mcfarley article that after mixing 24 hours you can leave it stored in a sealed container for quite some time or indefinitely???

I believe it differs with different types of salts as to how long it's good for after mixing.

No need to store too much mixed salt water. Always just keep enough mixed water for the next water change just in case.

Thank u for your help and i was just using it for water change/topoff so i could just do it quick but i did find PETCO has a saltwater 5 go mix I think I'm just gonna get one of those every two weeks it sounds easier then measuring salt for right salinity and stuff but thanks for the help

Those 5 gallon mixes at petco may mix at a lower salinity than you like. Make sure you verify that. I think they mix out to 1.021-1.022.

As stated above you do NOT use salt water for top off.

Read this carefully. Salt water is only for water changes. For top offs you need to use RO water. As your water evaporates the salt level raises. Therefore you need RO water to balance out the salinity level.

you only measure the first time. Just know how many cups of salt you used. After that always use the same amount (but always double check and measure). So the first time takes around 15min, but after that it takes longer to fill the bucket than it does to measure.

Or you could just filter ocean water, if you want to get into that.
