ORA oil spill

sciknen

$20.00 PEOPLE, COME ON.
Well just wondering

But ORA uses NSW. So will they be affected by the spill. They are Gulf Coast right?

i think they are in fort pierce, well north of miami on the east coast

Ok sweet.. Ive been to jupiter before.

Hope they cap this thing.
The environmental impact from this will be seen for years to come.
They said 3 times the Valdez disaster........I suspect worse than that.

Computer models say it will shoot up the ENTIRE EAST COAST by the end of the summer.

That would really suck.....hope they are wrong.

such a sad thing to see...i hope they can fix it soon or else there will be no more reefs down in the caribbean anymore.i'm pretty sure it's done alot of damage not just to marine life but people's lives are at stake too.90% of our seafood that the
U.S. consumes comes from he gulf...

That's a bit of an exaggeration but hopefully this will be a big push towards farmed shrimp, a market that is currently available but hugely underused. It should also pressure farmed snapper which is currently in the making. I am mostly concerned with the grouper market which is much bigger in the south but they are terrible to raise in captivity because of how messy and inefficient they are at eating. The best thing that can come out of this disaster is a push towards sustainability not only in seafood but also energy.

Farmed grouper , snapper, shrimp may be cool......

but Asian Carp are where it's at.

You don't even have to farm them or even travel to get them!
They come to you!

MmmmMMmmmmm a nice plate of Asian Carp with a side of Zebra Mussels.

Even though people are bashing Obama I think it is better if the gov stays out of decision making. Just heard from someone on the site that the reason the mud/cement thing failed was because the gov wanted to wait for 2 hours after the mud went down -- BP wanted to do cement right away. But they waited and it failed. Would it have failed anyway? Who knows but why is the gov in there? What do they know about deep sea drilling? AM I not supposed to say these things? I am not being political .... just let the experts do their job. What the gov could have done is change the law in this situation -- make an exception -- so BP would not lose the lease for capping the well. That's why they are not shutting it down.

JMO,but this thread is"Reef Related politics".
So,I don't see any reason why mentioning the government should be taboo.

Huh...is there some article somewhere that says the government made BP wait to do the cement?
I looked breifly and didn't find anything.

Also- I don't think BP is so concerned about losing a lease that they would just let the oil flow.
If they could shut it off they would.
The amount they will (hopefully) be paying for cleanup, and the cost in bad press is waaaaay more than the profits from one lost lease.

The information about waiting came from people working on the well -- not an article.

Depends on the size of the asset as to the protifability and the entire agreement.

kinda wanted to keep this towards ORA.. lol

I thought the issue about ORA was covered! :)

I am sure that everyone along the east and gulf coasts are trying to figure out what they will do when the oil hits. It could end up anywhere.

Just saying this oil spill wiped out the third largest reef in the world such a sad thing to hear ='( we should get a stimulus package going when its all said and done to try and re seed it when its cleaned up ill get on RC and see what people think!

I don't have too many Caribbean corals in my tank, just remember that seeding areas with non-native species isn't always the best course of action.

If you have any caribbean corals its most likely gorgonians or cup corals as there is a ban on the collection of Caribbean stony corals. You can only get stony corals that are attached to aquacultured rock.

And trying to get them to cherry pick for you is like pulling teeth. Plus their sites are often out of range of many of the more interesting species.
