pH Controller Opinions Needed

I'm looking into either the American PinPoint or the Milwaukee...

I'm ony interested in these two...

Any help would be appeciated...

Thanks
Michael

I'm not sure if milwakee makes more than one controller or not, but at least one that they do sell has only one set point whereas the pinpoint has two.

IMO the two set points is a big bonus if being used on a Ca reactor because you can have a high and low value. With only one set point you have a high or a low but not both. (it's nice to be able to keep the PH low enough AND have a safe guard that it won't go too low)

Probably reflects the price difference... I did look into the Aquacontrollers (JR) etc.... there are so many out there I didn't know what the he!! I was looking at.

For CO2 control the Milwaukee does a fine job for the price. If you need the dual set points then the Pinpoint would be your best bet.

Now an AC, now you're talkin! You can control your entire environment with an AC very effectively.

John, not sure I understand how a high and low point would work on a CA reactor. If the PH is too high, the Co2 kicks on until it's at the set level (and maintains the off position until it rises above the set level again). Seems like you would only need one set point?

With only one set point, if you have the Co2 turned up too high it can let the PH get lower than you would want. With some medias (ie arm regular) the media will turn to mush if the PH goes too low.

You surely can use a single set point controller for a Ca reactor, but having the high and low settings is some added insurance IMO. IIRC the price difference is within $50, for that I'd go with the pinpoint, but you don't need to.

Still not sure I understand :)

Let's say the set point is 6.6. When the controller senses an effluent ph level of 6.8 (Milwaukee is +/- .2) the Co2 kicks on via solenoid, thus lowering the ph of the effluent. The effluent ph drops due to the supply of Co2 until the effluent reaches 6.4, then it shuts off the Co2 via solenoid, preventing the effluent ph to fall any lower.

Yea, I might be confused to some extent here. I've been re-reading a few things to clarify what I'm thinking/saying..

I know with the pinpoint you have a set point and a range. The meter has high and low point readings based on the set point and range. This way you can set it to, for example, to turn on at 6.8 and turn off at 6.6.

IIRC with the milwakee that most fish places carry (is there more than one model, I thought they made more than one?) there is a set point but not a range adjustment. I am assuming that the range is preset, but I could be totally wrong.

I think in the end the pinpoint gives you a little more control over the range of PH. I had been reading the item descriptions online as meaning the accuracy was .2, but if that's the range, that makes perfect sense.

Also, I see the milwakee is now selling for $100 vs the $189 for the pinpoint. (so my $50 difference statment was wrong)

Yep, the range is preset @ +/- .2 on the ~$100 Milwaukee controller.

I'm pretty sure they make a more expensive model (~ $180) that has the same resolution as the comparable Pinpoint (resolution to the second decimal place), however; if all you're trying to accomplish is not turning your media into soup, then the $100 model with +/- .2 would be more than capable of performing the task IMO.
