Pinpoint Calcium Monitors

I have just seen a special on the PinPoint Calcium Monitor. I do not current use any of the monitors and have always been wary of how often one would have calibrate the system. My ex-wife's lab uses a sophisticated pH monitor, but does require regular calibration. So what's the hassle factor relative to here relative to accuracy with using say the Salifert tests?

Cleaning and Hassle, every two months just clean the probe with a soft tooth brush in vinegar and water.

As far as accuracy goes. The pinpoint has been a standard in the hobby for years and the margin for error well within acceptable range for our tanks. I would venture to say that margin is much tighter than the salifert kit (depending on the user of course) and certainly more consistent (have you ever tried to duplicate results with a kit? not easy)

Another advantage to the monitors is that they are always on. All it takes is a glance and you've got your reading. I rarely test on a daily basis now, unless I think there is a problem. Having the monitor increases the likelihood of spotting a bad trend quickly, maybe even before it becomes a problem.

Balance this against the cost of the monitor (some are really expensive) and ongoing maintenance. Maintenance of the pH probe is pretty much a snap... 30 minutes a month tops if you clean and recalibrate. There are also ongoing costs of replacing the probes. I think the pH probe is rated for 18 months of constant use?

I've spot checked my pH monitor with salifert and another kit that I can't remember the name of and it's always been accurate.
