Please help - what am I doing wrong??

GinaD

Very Happy Red Sox Reefer
I put some ROWA Phos in a media bag and submerged it into the sump and the water turned muddy brown. Am I using too much?

The directions didn't say to, and I was told not to. Should I have?

I did forget to put 'floss' around it. I also think I used too much.

you should use the pellet type media available with some brands if your gonna bag it. or rinse it as stated. better with a reactor though and when first started discard the initial water coming through.

I use a reactor, but i always run it in a bucket of SW for a few minutes before it goes back on the tank...

The first time I used Rowaphos, I put it in a filter bag and the tank turned muddy brown for two days. However, there didn't seem to be any detrimental effects..

The directions for the Rowaphos specifically say NOT to rinse.

However, the directions for the reactor say to divert the 1st gallon of water into a bucket.. Of course, I didn't read that until after I turned the tank brown again.. However, the second time the muddy brown went away after about 20 minutes..

I think it will be ok eventualy Gina but I would use some seperate carbon for a day.

rowa phos needs extensive rinsing with ro/di Gina, phosban needs alot less rinsing.

Thank you, everyone!

RowaPhos should ONLY be rinsed if using in a fluidized chamber. For all other applications you DO NOT rinse this product. Gina your tank will be fine. The water will clear and the RowaPhos will not harm the animals. Here's a snippet from the Rowa website:

Please note: For use in a fluidized reactor we recommend that you wash the media in
R.O. water prior to use to remove the fines, which would otherwise over fluidize and end
up in the aquarium. If this happens it WILL NOT cause any harm to the inhabitants.
For all other applications we recommend that you follow the instructions supplied with
the pack and DO NOT WASH ROWAphos as you will be removing active materials and
may deplete the capacity by removal of phosphates from the water that you are washing
it in. The unwashed material will initially color the water brown but with good water flow

The unwashed material will initially color the water brown but with good water flow will quickly disperse and have no negative effects on the health of your aquarium.

Thanks!
I freed up some space. :)
