QT TANK SETUP. help sick fish????

Most tanks do have ich but from my experience, if you have a fish that comes down with ich and then you treat it, if you add it right back into the tank it came from it is likely to get ich again.......it needs to build up a defense but 2 weeks in copper doesn't do that, it just kills the parasite but the fish is also not 100% healthy. Keeping the fish in QT while you let the tank go fallow diminishes 99% of the parasite in the tank (i won't say all for arguments sake) and then the fish has had time to fatten up and build a good immune system. I think it is pretty logical......i added a 25w EA UV to my tank to help manage my ich after i allowed the fallow period and i have been Ok since.

If you can safely hypo your entire tank than that is a good approach but most of us don't have that option.

Good luck

Ya but most all tanks have the parasite. Its just weather or not its managed. Depends on if it exposes itself.

Quite wrong.
Most tanks that have used good QT procedures don't have the parasite.
Mine doesn't have it.And I'm sure a good number of members also have parasite free tanks.

Just to clarify my above statement....I'm with Bob, parasite free tanks are out there.....I consider mine one of them as well and they are fully obtainable if the proper procedures are followed......it just comes down to the preference of the owner.

I will say that every LFS tank has ich! haha, that's just my opinion though.

Third to that, it takes a committed approach by the aquarist to establish and keep a tank ick free, but some do make that committment.

Ok I see that.I was just going by info that was told to me by another reefer. I am only 6 months into this so all is still a learning process for myself. I do agree that to maintain and have a thriving tank it does take a huge commitment. Which I am willing to do, I was greatly miss informed and it has cost me at this point.I am now at the point to where I have to back pedal and basically straighten out what has been wronged. Now the way to go about it is yet to be determined.I love the fact that I have so much help through this forum and plenty of you guys out there that know from experiance and I can say from now on I will only listen to BR members and thats it.Obviously my prior help was not as experianced as I assumed. Then there is the what works for one dosnt work for another factor....lol... Just the fact that at this point i feel like an idiot i guess is the only real damage done. Now its just remove all snails and Hypo the tank and hope that it does the trick and maintain a QT tank with a sponge from my sump some pvc elbows and an airstone? Thanks guys hope this works.I seriously have lost sleep the past two nights worrying about this tank.

There are plenty of successful tanks that have low level ick infections that are "managed". The misconception is that "all tanks have ick". Plenty do, but if the aquarist chooses to committ to the required treatment and Qt procedures it is possible to have a tank that is ick free.

There are a lot of ways to run a reef tank. You don't have to go the eradication route, but it's an option. Also note that many a fish have been killed because the aquarist rused into treating them. Take some time, read all you can, and then make an informed decision. Good luck whatever you do.

You know, just by reading this post I can tell you are going to be successful in this hobby.:)
Don't feel bad,a lot of us had a rough start at it when we first began. And you are not an idiot.
An idiot would just keep going with what they thought was right and ask no questions.Even us guys that have been in the hobby for a while or for a very long while sometimes learn something new.Or something has changed since we first got involved in this crazy hobby.

Maybe somebody in your neck of the woods can stop by and double check a couple parameters and help you out.
I know if you were close by I would have no problem giving you a hand.
But,it seems like you are on the right track now.

Pick up a good book.I started out with Bob Fenner the Conscientous Marine Aquarist. Some of the stuff is a little dated now, but,it gives you the overall important things to look for in the hobby.
My advice to you would be to try and learn how to mix your own salt water. This will give you a good grasp on what parmeters should be and you'll know what you are starting with.
Some LFS will sell you just ro/di,then you'll just need salt mix.

Lastly, don't sweat about or lose sleep over the tank.A lot of time new folks think it's a constant thing to check, recheck and dose.
Once you get to know your tank,it will be like an old friend.Yu'll be able to tell just by looking at it if something is not right. And when it has coral, you'll be able to tell how much calcium, alk the tank is consuming as you'll have a grasp on those parameters as well.

If you do attemp hypo in the DT make sure you have a refractor.Hypo is really only successful if the S.G. is at 1.008.
Read up on that as well.Become a reading machine about the hobby, knowledge is power.
Keep a book in the bathroom.;)
Good luck, and if you need anymore help feel free to ask.

Thanks psu4me....... I really appreciate all the help. Have decided to hypo going to pick up a new refract asap. Dont really trust the used one I have. Just rechkd the params and they are way off asfar as alky and calci. Wasn't sure if it was the error of me or what, but three trys same results pretty sure its the right readings.....once again thanks for all the help.
