Question about changing salts, and lowering Calcium

dcforester1

Finally enjoying my tank
I am changing the type salt I use from IO RC to Tropic Marin Pro. I only had some Regular Tropic Marin not the Pro, so I had to add supplements to it. When raising the Calcium I had my total tank voume(in the reef calculator) and not the amout in the make up water barrel. So instead of raising 30gal of salt up, I did the calculation for 90gal instead, so now my calcium in the barrel is at 550, instead of 450.

My questions are, how do I lower the calcium? How much water do I want to change at a time in the DT, and over how long? I have about 90gal total water volume, and I was thinking of doing 3, 10gal water changes over the next week. If i do that I dont think the high calcium would be an issue?

Any ideas/suggs are appreciated

Derek

Gradually change the salt at every water change you do. for your size tank Change 10gals (gradually do this every week.)

Thanks to all who replied. once again I used the collective imput of my fellow reefers to get myself thru a very trying situation. I dont know how I would ever get by without the imput from everyone.

Thanks Yuk

If you have another similar sized container you could put half of the mixed water in each, then add RO and salt to each to fill it so you have twice the total volume and the Ca would be dilluted right to about 450.

I agree, a gradual change is best. IIRC a lot of the time when people change salts, it gets reccomended to actually mix the two different brands in an increasing/decreasing ratio over a series of water changes.

Personally, I use the TM regular and for every 50 gals I add 50 grms of dowflake, and some (I have how much written down somewhere??) magflake/epsom solution. Saves some $$ if you hold out for a sale price on the 82lb bag of TM.

Hi John K

If its not much of a problem & you can find it could you possibly post the amounts used with 1 gal of RO/di water of dow flake, mag flake & epsom to go with the tropic marin salt?

Thanks
Mike

I was going to try that, but the reason I am changing is because of coral issues. I want to try and use good salt, so I can take that out of the equation. i am still trying to have SPS survive in my DT with no luck. I have rulled out Red Bugs, or an other4 pests. I have 0 Nitrates, and Phosphates. I dont know what else to do. I changed my bulbs. If this doesnt work I am tearing down my system and starting over.

Thanks for the help derek

Derek, If you ever need a quest answered shoot me a pm...(sometimes I don't get on the forum for a couple days but I do check my pm's) The kids get too quiet & I have to check up on them & that means I power down before I get to the RF... Anyway....I can send you my number thru pm if you ever have a question that you can't get answered...

Take care...

Thanks B, PM coming your way.

Derek, how high is your sps to the light? Seems that 150 14k is pretty low in a 75 with a 2' light spread. I have a 250DE phoenix in a 25 gal and off to the side, the sps won't color up....alive tho. SPS need high lights...might want to consider that in your quest...

I kept hearing this, and was thinking of upgrading, UNTIL........... a person to remain nameless had the same exact light, same bulbs, same color, and the same tank. I was bummed needless to say. I actually bought the SPS from him, and they sere doing just fine in his tank.

I have them way up high, and it doesnt seem to help. I just bought a reflector with a 250w halide, I might set this up in a frag tank and see what happens.

Im open for any, and all suggs

grounding probe for stray voltage? if you can eliminate everything else....I've had it happen...I always use a ground now

that is a good point Andy....No reef tank should be running without one!! Titanium is the one of choice...they are not alot of money either....You can find them online for 20 bucks..
