Seems it has to on all the time?I thought they came on when the power went out.Am I missing something besides a manual?

if you are talking about the air pumps that most have ( not sure what Category 5 is ,thought you were talking a bout a Cat 5 hurricane , but then again havent had even a full cup of caffeine yet ;) )

they have to be plugged in and turned on all the time when the power connection is broken thats when the air comes on ..HTH

My APC battery back up is running on AC all of the time, the battery only kicks in if the power is out.

Same with my smaller batter backup air pumps.

Not sure what pump(s) you are talking about. The Penn Plax B11's (about $12-15) are the ones that come on when the power goes out. I have one or more in every tank. Very inexpensive life insurance for your fish.

That's a lot of pump...... I bought the one Greg was talking about for my tanks.

Of course I also bought a 16kV natural gas powered backup generator with auto-transfer........

I have had a few of the B11's and they havn't been very reliable for me 2 of them just won't work after only running a few times not to mention they aren't strong enough to pump from under the cabinet.
Auto transfer mmmmm.
Anywho back to the hurricane... it's on or off plugged in or not.Just doesn't seem right.I thought it would come on in the event of power loss.

They are not the highest quality pump, but I've found if you get one that's working well, usually it will work properly even years later. IMO it's not a really good idea to have a pump like this under your cabinet. If a siphon starts it could MT your tank. I hang mine on the back of my tank. They have no problem pumping though 30" of water and into an airstone.
