Red Coris Wrasse

I was thinking of adding an adult red coris wrasse to my reef tank. Wondering if anyone has any experience with this type of fish? Incredible colors on this fish. I already have a six line that has shown signs of aggression to other new additions so just wondering.

They are tough to get as an adult & accept prepared food...as with other wrasse associated issues:
1) Prone to Carpet surf.
2) can be known to nip on corals.
3) & they are tough to get to grow out from a juvi..(that is the best way to acclimate them to prepared food...

I'll bet one out of ten surrive in the captive reef...


We have one gent in the club who has one...He claims it is fat & happy.. His name is Nick...Maybe he will chime in for ya...


I know when I had a SWFO for close to 10 years. (before I went to a reef tank close to 9 years ago)

I tried to keep one of those more than once..(three adult & 1 juvi) I then decided it wasn't gonna happen...Colors are what got me...the pin point neon blue dots glow!!! (the sad thing...My adults were fat & healthy when I got them...) But they were from the wild...they withered away....(it was sad!!)

I'm assuming you are referring to the coris gaimard and not a coris formosa. I guess it doesn't matter. Unlike the canary coris, neither are invert safe. Might be ok as a juvenile but when they get bigger you can kiss goodbye any snails, shrimp, crabs, or whatever else you have.

Thanks for the feedback. I decided to pass on getting this fish. Just looking for that one last addition to the tank. Already have a hippo tang, flame angel, six line, two clowns, yellow goby, firefish, chromis and lyretail anthias. Any suggestions?

leopard wrasse' after you remove the 6 line. I feel like the 6 line really limits your options. Plus when a 6 line gets larger, they're known to go crazy and kill inverts.

I agree, the 6 line would have to go in order to add another wrasse. They are pretty aggressive. What about different kind of angel? How big is your tanK?

Thanks for the replies. Apologies for the delay in responding, away on vacation with no internet access (not always a bad thing). Anyway, my tank is a 120 reef. Wife and I have taken a liking to our six line. He has shown agressiveness to a yellow coris I added that didn't survive. but all in all he's entertaining. hate to get rid of him. I already have a flame angel and was told adding another angel is not a good idea
any advice on this?

My 6 line does show aggression, but does not bother my red headed wrasse that I added after. I have two leopards that I love.. they are as active as a sixline but in a different tank so I wouldnt know how well they would do together. If you can get a purple tang past the hippo they are nice.. and also fairly aggressive. I love my fox face rabbit(venomous tho) I added a purple pseudochromis as my last fish in the 55(known to be nasty) with the six line and they do fight a little, but both seem to handle it ok.
