i just noticed in one of the corals for sale posts that a fellow reefer had a flame angel in his reef tank.i didnt think that they were reef safe for some reason otherwise i would have had one .are they reef safe?

They're hit or miss. For me is a miss, 3 times already, if you count hippo tang, then that's 4.

I think that they are hit or miss as far as being reef safe. I wouldn't risk it but that's just me. Rather not have to take apart all my rockwork to get it out afterwards.

2 here no problems

Hit or miss... Some don't nip but most probably will. If you're looking for an angel for a reef tank, I've had success with a cherub on 2 different occasions. The best way to help prevent coral nipping is to keep them busy with interesting rockwork, and offer them a wide variety of foods so they don't get bored.

Have had a Flame Angel for over 3yrs with no issues but like others have mentioned it is hit or miss.

it depends on what type of reef you have. If you have meaty brain coral, the flame angel will most likely go for it. Also true for purple tang, I used to have one that killed a flame red lobo brain in my tank. Hippo tang does the same thing sometime. Now I only trust yellow tang in my main display. I am going to put a flame angel in a mushroom/leather tank.

would love to have the color in my tank, and ive had them in my fish only tank for years before going reef and i loved having them ,but just my luck i'd pick a coral destroyer.maybe i'll try one out in my nano before introducing it into my 125.thank you all for your input

I have tried two in the past and both nipped sps. All pygmy angels are hit or miss in my opinion and just because it hasn't been an issue for years doesn't mean one day it won't start eating your corals. Another small angel that is on the safer side from what I have seen is the potters angel.

Had mine for about 2 years..no nipping.
