Reef Octopus - Glowing review.

And I thought this thread was going to be about a new octopus that we can have in our reef tanks lol.

Hi rich or anyone else, i have a question on the octopus skimmer that someone might be able to answer for me. I recieved my 150 today and the pump barely turns when plugged in and has a bad vibration. however with some wiggleing and partially removing it from the water ( kinda like primeing it) it does start to work. But I feel it is still not working right as it will not make small bubbles and nowhere near enuf. Did you or anyone else have this problem? and if so will the pump start working properly after a while (breakin? ) never heard of a breakin period for pumps they either work from the box or not, correct? I have e-mail Marinesolutions about this but thought I would ask here also. Just curious if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks, sorry to bug anyone but after waiting for it and this happening it's kinda frustrating

Joe,

My 150 has the same problem with the pump. It needs to be "primed" to work. At first I brought the pump to the surface but now I just use a bicycle pump to blow air into the airline hose which starts the pump right up. I contacted Rob at Marinesolutions and he sent out a new pump but I have yet to hook it up because it arrived while I was on vacation. I will probably hook it up tonight and I will give you an update if it works any better.

Other than the pump issue, this skimmer works excellent and is an amazing deal. $125 for a skimmer that can handle 150+ gallons or $190 for a skimmer that can handle 200+ gallons.

What's the largest tank anyone actually ran one of these on?

I have a 180 and added a 150 rubbermaid plus I have a 20g refug and 30g q tank that when empty connects to the system.

I currently have a euroreef 8-3 and I think it is not strong enough.

Thanks Dennis, that is what I have figured outif I blow in the air tube it works. Still waiting to hear back from Marinesolutions, if he is going to send along a new pump then I will install it. I figured out the bubble problem. I was planning on cleaning it but had not put vinigar in the water yet. Once I put in the vinegar BAM! bubble city, so that is solved. They don't make many bubbles in fresh water only (hee hee, boy do I feel dumb). Anyway thanks for the feedback and let me know if the new pump works for you.

Rich- any update on the skimmer..skimmate any darker than your previous pic.or ru just running very wet?

doesn't look like the 200 will fit where i want it unless i remove a baffle.
would the 150 be enough for the 125g you think?

either way, this looks to be a good upgrade to my 90's model CPR-SR4. :D

I can adjust it all I want, I just like skimming on the wet side.

The 150 is about the same size as an ASM G3, at 6" x 24", and is what, like $149?. I'd think it'd handle a 125, btu I havent used one, so not sure.

I've got an SR4 sitting on a shelf....

Joe,

I installed the new pump last night and it works perfectly on start up. Unfortunately, while I was cleaning the old pump and collection cup I dropped the collection cup and broke it so I contacted Rob to see if I can get a new one.

The NW150 is rated for 220 gallons and is a 6" diameter body so it should be able to handle a 125 just fine. The price for the NW150 is $125 + shipping ($140) at www.octopusskimmer.com (marinesolutions)

How's that saying go "when it rains it pours". Sorry to hear about the breakage but happy to hear the pump works. Still waiting to hear back from MS. I did however anticipate him doing the same for me so went ahead and installed the skimmer this morning and got the pump started and it been working all day and making skimate almost immediatly. Thanks for the input onthe pump and will post what happens on the replacement. If he does what he did for you for me then that says alot about customer service for MS.

Dennis, i was curious to know if you were required to send the defective pump back to MS before he sent the new one. I have been using the defective waiting for the new replacement pump and got an e-mail today saying I had to send the old one back first. A pain in the * having to change out skimmers again!
