Refractometer Test at Oct 1 BRS meeting???

I'm thinking of possibly organizing a test of refractometers that folks might be usingto all test a single batch or two of salt water to see how close they are to each other.

I've never seen such a comparison done in detail, and I worry that so many folks simply accept them as a definitive value if they read DI water correctly.

I might even make and bring a refractive index standard.

Anyone have any comments or suggestions?

I assume plenty of you have refractometers?

I'll bring my refactometer, maybe my swing-arm hydrometer too.

After I calibrate the refractometer, I'll measure my RO/DI water to see if it really is useful as a benchmark for 0 ppm salt.

I posted this on RC, so here my $.02 again...

I think this is a great idea Randy! I made one of your standards and found my refractometer to read a SG of 1.028 when it should have read 1.0264. And a friend has the same brand refract as me and got the same results. Very concerning. I look forward to checking my refract against your standard. I'll bring the standard I made up also just in case.

Those of you with refractometers, I presume that they read in sg, but do they have any other units on them? RI (refractive index)? Salinity (ppt)?

For those that have both sg and salinity in ppt, can you folks check for me and see what sg is claimed to correspond to 35 ppt on the scale of your refractometers?

Mine says to calibrate with distilled water.
