Remote sump - dreaming for now...

I know a lot of you all here have sumps in your basement. I don't have a basement, but do have room about 50' away where I could put a sump and run the plumbing in the crawlspace. This installation would be a integral component of my REP (reef expansion plan)

Anybody with a similar setup? If so, I'd like to hear details about how you're moving the water from the tank to sump and back. (pump sizing/model, pipe diameter etc.)

I can see gravity from tank to crawlspace but from there? The room is a step down from the level of the tank - but not much.

I'm getting tired of schlepping hoses / buckets through the house.

Well I run my sump in a room about 5 feet away. Liam recommended that I keep my sump off the ground and as close to the level of water in my tank so my return pump didn't have to work as hard. This was great advise. It allowed me to get a much less wattage pump for a return.

I believe that JayM has a long horizontal run from his sump.
I have a basement sump that's about 11 feet vertical from the water level of the DT.
I'm running a GenX Mak4 for a return pump and pushing through 1" PVC.It's a workhorse pump but can be a little noisy IMO.Glad it's in the basement.
When you plan this out do your best to avoid 90 deg. bends.Lots of folks use spa-flex pvc pipe to make gentle bends.

The return probably would have about 5ish ' of vertical (tank to crawlspace)after that a gently sloping run of around 30'. I can keep the turns to a minimum. Also would be able to tap into a drain line for easy water changes - we're keeping this house so I can do this sort of thing :)

The tricky part in my mind is from the tank to the sump. Is the 5ish ' drop going to be enough to have it flow via gravity?

how would you get the water to the sump from the DT..would you have to pump it that far of a distance??

I do, but there's still a 13' drop from my 72's drain to my sump...because it's in the basement. Look over Brian's design, it's closer to what you want to do, and I can tell you that as long as your drain drops 1/4" per foot, it will drain fine.
