Repairing a Euro-reef?

Picked up a used euro-reef ES5-2B on RC. Looks and runs almost like new...except.....there is a leak at the seal of the main tank. Not where you take the cup off. There is a seam that runs around the diameter of the body just at the point it begins to taper to union.

Any suggestions on how to fix this? Is it fixable. I have an email into euro-reef...we'll see if I get a response since I am not the original buyer.

I think that will be easily fixable with a thick solvent glue such as Weld-on #16. I've got a tube here in Lawrence if you want to borrow it, or swing by and give it a shot.

Nate, are the ES series made of acrylic...I thought it was some type of extruded something or other? Will the weld-on still work?

I don't know Linda. They might be polystyrene, now that you mention it.

I'm not positive the weldon would work on that. See what E.R. says, and if you want we can give it a try.

From what I understand, the ES series use extruded acrylic instead of cast acrylic. I looked into getting one of these when I was researching skimmers.

Both are acrylic, so the weldon should work. The extruded acrylic is much cheaper to manufacture than the cast acrylic, but at the same time less durable.

I would not go with a thick material like weld-on, I have never had good results. I would suggest using Plextic solvent. Its as thin as water and uses capilary action to flow into the gap, dries in seconds.

spectrum, weld-on #4 is like you describe, but that only works on thin cracks (read hair-line).

Aquadiva, I have both Weld-on #4 and #16 (thin and thick) at my house in Haverhill if you want to stop by. Or if you are going to the meeting, I'll bring it with me to repair for you at the meeting.

Id ask scott merrill, he has a very good substance that you can put on even it its not 100% dry, it fixed a small leak in my carbon chamber.

I agree with nate, its fixable...shouldn't be too hard at all.

couldn't he use a slow setting epoxy? that stuff works great and it sticks to plastic once cured...just an idea but i dont know if there are any concerns with chemical in epoxy that could harm a tank..

I would think that a solvent glue (weldon 4 or 16) would work better than epoxy since it actually melts the two pieces together into one piece of plastic.

I've got both weldons as well Linda. It looks like you won't have any trouble finding help.

Thanks for the info guys. Still haven't heard back from Euro-reef. If I can't locate any weld-on up in this neck of the woods, I will take one of you guys up on your offer.

FYI, heard back from Euro-reef, and their preferred fix is acrylic glue (weld-on) #4 applied with a syringe. So ya guys were right.
