RO , DI Units...Which ones do you recommend

Time for my own RO/DI unit. Wondering if you suggest 3-stage, 4-stage, brnd name?
Looking for something simple but effective for 90 gallon/30 gal. sump. Appreciate your input.

You also need to consider where your water is coming from.

Do you have well?

Do they treat your town water with chloramines?

i just got a aqua FX barracuda and i love it so far. (only made 20 gals so far) check out the ones from buckeye feild supply and BRS they looked nice too. be sure it has a good brand name membrane like filmtek

BRS good to go. Agree with Flame Angel be sure to check if your water has chlormines you will need an additional filter if it does.

BRS is great, also check Spectra Pure they have has refurbished 90 gpd units at a great price

I suggest doing a search on their website for the city as they have to post them. I would think that most municipalties would these days.

You should be able to call them and get an answer as well.

That is what I did. Checked online and then called to confirm. Too much money in this hobby to make an error like that.

Check the air, water, and ice sponsor thread on here. They have some good deals for members. I just ordered the extreme typhoon III as an early Chirstmas gift to myself.

i live in boston and cheched my tap water with a tds meter and got a reading of 81 ppm. after running it through a di filter that i got from dr foster and smith its made by api and it cam out at 1 ppm.

I have a AIR Water Ice, and very happy with it, customer service top notch as well.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. It sounds like everyone favors a 4-stage system. If no chloramines in the water does a 3-stage work? When do people use
only a 3-stage? Lastly, are the gpd accurate? I mean if its 75gpd, does really take only 24 hours to make 75 gallons?

Production rate truly depends on water pressure @ the membrane. I can tell you with my 75 GPD membrane it takes about 4 hours to make 15 gallons. My pressure is 50psi at the membrane. I am however also filtering 5 stages, my RODI unit is 30ft away from the supply (through 1/4" tubing the whole time) and I am about two months past due for new sediment filters {still putting out 0 TDS though so I'm being lazy} so my production rate is a bit below normal. Slower is better, the faster you push through the membrane the less effective it will become. Also FWIW water temperature plays a big part; If I recall 75*f is ideal temp for production rate/ effective TDS removal

All good feedback, Pat. So, when is a 3 stage unit good enough. I see you have a 5 stage and most people have 4 stages. At the moment, Air, Water & Ice have a 5 stage unit (50-75 gpd) for $139.00 and BRS has a 4 stage @ 75gpd for $129.00. These look like great prices?

The more prefilters the less often you need to replace any given one, and the more protection for the all important membrane. For example if you have an extra stage you can run a 5 micron carbon, and then a 1 micron carbon which allows you to prefliter down to 1 mic without having to constantly replace that 1 mic prefilter. Without that extra stage, you need to either go with a 5 micron and send that lower qulaity water to the membrane, or go with a 1 micron but that will need near constant replacing. In the end the operating cost will be lower if you have an additional stage or two.

On membranes, you want to be sure to get a quality membrane with a high rejection rate. For example filmtec is basically the industry standard, but note that their 75 gpd units have a notably higher rejection rate than some of the others such as their 100 GPD membrane. If you get a lower rejection rate, you will blow through DI cartridges far faster than with a very high rejection rate. Either way, the membranes cost about the same and last a long time. DI cartridges get expensive fast if you need to change them a lot.

Also since I don't think anyone said it yet, RODI systems are basically all the same, or rather are all made of interchangeable components. Point being, If you compare units with the same specs and the same bells and whistles they generally can be compared equally.

I'd suggest looking for at least 4 stages with a pressure gauge, Auto shut off, membrane flushing bypass, and dual TDS meter. You can save a few $ up front if you get some thing without all of those things, but in the end you'll probably regret if you do.

IME the AWI typhoon III is a great unit for the price, but I suspect that you could get something with all the same features for competitive prices from bulkreef supply or some other vendors. Also IME AWI customer service is excellent.
