Is there a point where the crab should be banished to the refuge? My crab is fairly large now and in the last week i have lost 2 fish. I had my suspicion the crab was suspect. 1st fish was a yt damsel that was now feeling well anyway so not a big deal, he may have gone on his own and then been eaten. Today however i got home from work this morning and found the crab chowing on my new 2 week old coral beauty! This fish was perfectly ok, not sick or anything. should i be concerned about the crab eating up the rest of my stock? should i try to capture him and put him in the refuge or give him away? Or is this just a fad he will get over (wishful thinking).

thanks
Joe

Yeah, i don't care what anyone says, those things are a menace. My buddy bad had to spear and kill the one he had in his 24g because it ate several fish before he caught on. They do seem to be excellent cleaners, tho... :-)

Quick and elusive

Looks like I am still a couple of months behind you. My SLF is getting large. Body is a bit smaller than a dime and it is extremly fast and twitchy (startles at the slightest motion). She just came out, left the rock and as soon as it saw me i leaped back to the rock actually left the ground. Good luck evicting it. Let us know how you do it

The body on my SLF is about the size of a quarter. There are 11 fish to choose from in a 72G with a lot of LR, and mine sticks to picking algae off my LR. You also don't know that the SLF actually killed the coral beauty....it might just be doing it's job.....

Ur right I don't know but I will be watching. it does swipe at the fish when they get close. the body on mine is about between a quater to half dollar size and more toward the half dollar, it is real big. but chances are i would never be able to catch it anyway. i will be watching though.

Joe

Hey Joe - that sucks - sorry to hear about your Coral Beauty. I know you were really happy to get that fish. My sally is very large - I've never had him eat any fish. Sometimes I see him picking at corals - not sure if he's eating the flesh or picking off the algae. They do seem to be good cleaners. I'd watch him closely.

maybe it's the rouge harlequin starfishes i just got! you should be careful too! (hee hee just kidding) . ya i'm keeping an eye on him, maybe just a coincidense, not sure. the cb was fine from what i can tell but who knows. either way he's gone so i will wait a while now before replacing him. thinking more about a flame angel instead, i need some red in my tank. i'm also thimking of fragging the tree and devils hand you gave me. the trees are huge now and the hand is developing a second ring around the bottom like a cup but one side has a large bulge on it i may take off. will have to give you a call one of these days to make sure i will do it correctly. catch ya later

Joe

I haven't seen that damn starfish since he went in the tank! Glad to hear those softies are so happy. Give me a buzz if you have any questions fragging - it's very easy - just take a razor blade and lop off a hunk! Then I put the frags in a small plastic cup with some rock rubble. They will encrust onto the rock rubble in no time.

I have had mine for going on 4 weeks and the bigger one just now ventures out at feeding time, grabs a mysis or 2 then dissappears back into the rocks not to be seen again until next feeding time. At least he is now coming all the way out of the rocks. at first all you saw was the tips of the legs reaching out, that looks real funny.

Mine is an eating machine

I feed him Dried Krill which i place near his cave on the end of a rigid plastic tube. He comes completely out of his cave and wrestles the krill from the nd of the rod. Can actuall feel a substantial tug o war. One of my favorites..
