Setting up plumbing

Salting away
I am going to be setting up a 23gal refugium/sump in the next couple of weeks. What I would like to know is how do ppl have their plumbing set up. Are they using flexible tubing, or like real pvc? If they are using pvc how easy is it to install leak free? I think I like the pvc look, but does that limit future flexibility. I want to split my return line so I have 2 returns to the tank. Am I just better off going with black flexible tubing? Any input would be appreciated....

A lot depends on location of main tank and fuge/sump. My fuge, etc is in basement so my drain return lines are clear flex tubing. Home depot sells all sizes. I found by using pvc you're limited to 45 and 90 degree elbows which greatly reduces head loss of the return pump. If you go to reefcentral.com there is a head lost calculator so you can figure out what you'll need for a return pump.......and with flex tubing if you ever have to add valves or extra "t's" you can cut them in with a knife and install with hose clamps.....no messy pvc glue.

I do have some pvc but not much.

IMO

the downside to using clear or colored tubing, especially near a refugium (lighting present) is the algae build up and growth that is going to happen inside the clear tube. over time, thats going to get nasty.

If your worried about flex then go with spaflex. get the right glue or it may leak on you. (more so in a pressure application like on a return pump)

otherwise i would just run PVC. get the 10.00 cutters at home depot and the primer.

check out www.inlandreef.com they still keep thier site up and the should still have a great pic for the layout of a fuge setup

spa flex is so much easier to use than rigid pvc, IMO. I'd order some from www.savko.com and do it that way. Much cheaper online than at lowes.

Don't use clear tube. It'll constantly spit nasty filmy stuff into your display tank when it peels off the inside.

Thanks for the website. What would you recommend for sealant? Also can I put valves on the flexible pvc? Do they make pvc holders so I can have it tight against the tank. Sorry for so many questions but I'm new to this DIY stuff...
