shields for my lumenarc's - need help

Hi all,

I have a couple lumenarc mini's that I've noticed over the last several months are not reflecting as much due to salt spray. I've tried to clean them, but that is NOT very easy.

I am interested in putting shields on them, but am nervous about using glass - Don, didn't you have an issue with glass shields not too long ago???

Is there an acrylic-like substance that I can use as a shield on my lumenarc's that isn't quite so temperature sensitive?

What is everyone else using?

Thanks!

I had to get some custom cut for my Coralife Advanced fixtures. Kind of a pain because not all glass shops will do it with tempered glass, which is what I would recommend. I tried a standard sandwich type with the sheets of plastic in between to keep them from shattering and they broke in less than a day. I have had no problems with the tempered though and these lamps get hot. Shops will custom cut the shields but they are small for tempered glass so you have to hunt for one that will cut them that small. Also internet can be successful but then shipping is involved also. good luck!

They are definately a pita to clean. That's the only reason I have sheilds on 2 of them. The one that doesn't have a sheild has a that huge center brace underneath it, so it doesn't get too bad. I never had problems with the glass sheilds, but I did recently have a problem with 2 Reeflux bulbs exploding. FWIW, you have to be easy sliding the sheilds in and out as they don't "slide" very well.

aaaahhh - that's what it was! I remember you telling me something about glass exploding. Not sure why I thought it was the shield itself. :)

Thanks for the info everyone. Maybe I'll just go with the glass ones then. Anyone know where to get them? I went to the website where I originally bought the reflectors, and they didn't sell them.

I went to Lowes and got some Lexan. The Lexan can withstand higher temperatures that other acrylics. I remember doing a search and there was one other acrylic that is even better but REALLY expensive. The Lexan is not cheap either but it works...I have been using it for the last year with no propblems.

The other choice is to go to a local glass shop and just give them the thickness and width/height.
