Working on gathering all the necessary equipment to get the 150 gallon spun up and I'm currently shopping for a protein skimmer. I was bouncing around between Red Sea/Tunze/Simplicity and came across LifeReef products. I like the "use any pump you'd like" bit with them and the idea of supporting a fellow hobbyist run business. I was wondering if anyone in the group has had experience with their equipment and could provide some feedback on their overall experience? Also if the almost maintenance free claims (minus cup cleaning) are legit? Thanks y'all!

I have two simplicity before, started with one and went with another for an upgrade. It is a really good skimmer that's plug and play. DC as well. Definitely a great bang for the bucks. No bs just simple quality like the brand suggested, I liked it a lot. Do size up a bit tho, I think the rated gallon is a bit over stated. I run a 320 on my 120g+30g sump. Maybe a 540 would be great for a 150g and you can always lower the power with the dc controller.

Are you currently just using the included controller for it?

Correct. The simplicity doesn't have any fancy IoT capabilities so if you want Wi-Fi/BT/Apex integration it won't come with that. That's why it's a lot more affordable since unfortunately firmware and IoT stuffs are where companies make most of their markup in the product development world these days.

Hands down get the Icecap K3 skimmer from the CoralVue outlet store. The K3-160 is a little over $300 and is rated for 250 gallons light bioload and 125 gallons heavy bioload and it's a DC skimmer. I got one on sale for future dream tank for under $200 on one of their super sales and also got a K3-160 on another super sale for my current tank setup and iif you buy it before Friday I can give you a 15% off coupon for open box items so it would end up being around $275-$280.

Damn this is a good deal. Definitely look into this.

Uh, 110% I'd be in to take that code if you're offering. A sub $300 quality skimmer? Sold.
