So what's the verdict on the new Rio Seio?

Brian

Jim Nabors is WAY cool!!
Anyone own one, I'm curious how you like them? I LOVE the Tunze but it's far too much flow for my need and the cost is prohibitive, but this new Rio seems to be a perfect fit...

so far love it. We have the Tunze in the big tank, but have three in the smaller tanks. Two items to watch, run them on GFI and hope for the best, do not count on the suction cups to mount them long term. The make a real Southdown storm when the cups give out!

I've read on a few posts on RC that you have to clean them more regularly otherwise they sometimes seize up and stop running. When they work ...they work. I also heard you need to remove the flow director because it restricts.

that's what I was thinking would be the case

I have one that I don't need anymore (since the tank upgrade) if anyone wants it. its the 820 GPH one. Good flow, not quite as nice as the Tunze, but didn't create a sandstorm either so in some applications it is better.

I bought the 820 gph model, and apart from the large size I love it so far. Until putting in the seio I had only a Mag 9.5 for water movement. With the Seio running, my tank actually looks like an ocean - tons of flow. I have heard of the potential cleaning problems, but I'm going to see for myself. I can't wait for the controller to come out.

I'm waiting for some long term use results. Just the name RIO connected to it causes me concern. Of course I also want to see the bigger models & controllers come out :D

Dave always about you. "I" this and "me" that.

When will you add value?

Do you have an opinion on the Seio?

To be honest I think they would be great for a small tank but larger set ups would do well with an Ocean Motion or Tunze.

I'm running the 620 on a tank and have both the 620s and 820s on the shelf. They look pretty good for a small tank the 620 would be fine.
I do not think that it's a fair comparison to the tunze though. It's like saying Yugo and Benz both have 4 wheels so lets put them in the same category. :)

And of course there is:

so true!

I'm going to go against the grain here, but  ....I had the 820 in my 75. It's too big (takes up too much space), the suction cups suck (actually they don't!), and the hang on device is too restrictive (can't swivel the powerhead with this on). I think the 820 produces too much current in one direction for my tank. My anemone didn't seem to like it all - she was standing way up on her leg like she was going to move - she hasn't moved since I put her in the tank 9 months ago. Since I removed it, she's happy again.

Marvin, since you were so nice to "obtain" it for me, do you want it?

I will take it but maybe you can trade it for a frag or something. I think if you had a wave maker or a timer it might be a better solution for you.

if you can't trade it for a frag I will take it and owe you a frag of something.

Deal?

I ordered one of those cheap hydor bioflo attachments for my maxi-jet 1200. It should be coming in the mail tomorrow. If I don't like that I'm going to get a wavemaker. Again, a short-term solution - I'm going to get an oceanmotion when I get my bigger tank. :D

Yeah, ok I'll do the frag thing. I couldn't accept money because I didn't pay for it, but trading it for a frag is a good idea. Does anyone want a Seio 820 that has a nice frag they'd like to trade??

daire,
i'll take it. what do you want for frags? i have plenty of things :D

also i have read that people have been having problems running them on a wavemaker.
the constant switching is causing the impellers to de-magnatize

Scott - excellent! What do you have that's colorful? Any M. Capricornus (just got a beautiful green from Rebecca) or any ricordea? Can't do anything that requires a LOT of light. I only have 4 65W PCs - new lighting is my next big purchase. Let me know what you have. I'll bring the Seio to the meeting.

I see a bunch of "good for a small tank" posts. Can we put a number to what size a small tank is. For example, I would assume my 55 gallon would count as a tank way too small for a Tunze setup, but maybe just right for a Seio.

Yeah, I'd say anything under 90 gallons would be good for...above 50 gallons, the bigger one would be better. If you have a 90 or bigger, I'd consider a couple if you don't want to splurge for Tunze Streams
