So how does the Alk stay up around 9?

If you have corals in the tank and notice alkalinity and calcium dropping, you would keep it there by supplementing with a 2 part additive, using a balanced supplement like kalkwasser, or using a calcium reactor.

I would see if someone in your area can hold any remaining fish until your tank has finished cycling.
