SPS Growth with "Cheapo" LEDs

May 3 2012

ok, there are 5 frags , I need to retake as you cant tell the colors unfortunately IMG_4864.JPG, but there they are

yellow digi is 1, slimmerer is 3rd, bird 4............................

It looks like all these chinese LED are made by Taotronic. I got one off eBay but guess what, they wired the fans backward, now I have air blowing on my face when standing next to the tank. I contacted the eBay seller and he is not helping at all.
Otherwise, the light is pretty bright and they drop shipped it from China very very quick (impressive). The construction quality of it is so so when compared to the higher end LED I have. But it does its job so far just don't know how long it will last.
One thing nice of it is it has wide spread.

can you please point me to which ebay item light you were refering to?

EpicTouch 4G

yes you can take the non dimmable drivers out and replace them with dimmable drivers about 55-60 dollars per driver they have dimmable ones on ebay now as well

And if it's not too much trouble could you take a video of the light setup, I really want to get a set of the lights

Dimmable drivers usually go for $34 for meanwell and $17 for maxwell

Most commercial fixtures wire their led in parallel (not series) so be very care if you replace drivers on these

FYI
Are you sure it wasn't intentional... You can pull the heat off sinks and pcb boards with the same or more cooling effectiveness then pushing the air at it. It depends on the design and air flow.

You are right that they want to cool the chip (3w LED) more effectively so they reverse the airflow after they switch from 1w to 3w chips. But they are too cheap or cared less to reposition the vents on the fixture. The eBay seller, I assume is the factory rep/sales, was totally not helpful to address the "blow air at you face issue".

I am looking for one to replace the MH I have for my plant room, when I bring my plants in for the summer. Can someone recommend one for more daylight spectrum for plants?

Just realized that a chinese LED would be perfect in place of having to hang a 600w MH from my rental unit. I know I can probably search chinese led grow light, but I figure some could recommend a somewhat better brand.

Update

Ok some updated pics, It was hard ID some of them as the plugs got encrusted and the notch was filled, Guessing the less than impressive growth on the birdnest is due to algae growth, these are in the same tank as my RBTAs and queen angel that get fed a lot. I wasnt sure about the yellow acro and digi so those arent included. So here goes after 3 months. I will take a side pic with a measuring tape

Most people have had decent luck with evergrow for aquarium lights, I know they make plant lights as well. (chekc aliwxpress).

My led light is only 108watts with 40&60 degree optic lenses and my sps are doing great in a 35g tank

I believe the Evergrow led and other Chinese made LED are 120watts so it should be sufficient to grow SPS
