Starting to gather stuff for my 40 breeder build.

I am starting to get everything ready for my 40b build and have a few questions. I have used a sump before but used an overflow box.

I am most likely going to place an order with glass holes and want to be sure I am getting the right stuff. I kind of jumped the gun and grabbed a pump today rathed at 600gph, is this way overkill? I was planning a 1" bulkhead for the overflow and a 3/4" return. The 1" bulkhead on GH says it is good for 300gph so do I need to go bigger? I don't even know what I need to know for a standpipe. I am reading up on this stuff but it is kind of over whelming to be honest. I am not used to being this much of a noob lol. I am drilling the bottom if that makes a difference. My plan is the 2 holes side by side and have the return come up and I guess over my overflow and in to the tank with the loc-line return kit. I am going to do more reading and looking at pictures of different setups. Thanks in advance for any help at all. I am going to overload the search feature some more. Thanks!!

look at my thread about drilling a tank ,i asked a similar question , john k posted some threads he dug up for me on bean and herbie doruso overflows . that explains a lil more i was stuck like u still am a lil but i think u actually gotta get hands on or some one whos done it before to doit with you or for you .

Holy crap, and here I was thinking I could just go straight down to the sump from the overflow and straight up in to the tank with the return. I was going to use pvc with a ball valve for both for maintanance. I am still a ways off from starting but I will take pictures as I progress and start a build thread.

I think this pump will work out good. I just realized at a head of 3 feet it will only be 493gph wide open or 333gph closed. I am thinking about a 36" tall stand so my head will be a little less than that so I am thinking I will be able to tune the flow to 400gph either with the built in adjustment or with a ball valve.

I am just going with an overflow box. I can't see putting tons of money in to a tank that is still just a 40 breeder at the end of the day. At least this way I can make a little bit of my money back down the road or just hand on to the overflow for something else. If it was rimless or something I would spend the money.

I have a glass-holes overflow and I love it... It's hardly noticeable in the tank. I would definitely go that route for a smaller tank because there is less room and you don't want to see large equipment taking up space... Save the extra cash and invest in an ecotech pump, you will have no problem exporting nutrients from the display into the sump...

I was going to go with the glas holes for the return and possibly the overflow but they aren't shipping until the end of the month. I may just build one with a similar design so I don't have to wait that long. At first I wanted to drill the bottom so the tank can sit right up agains the wall but now I am thinking about just making the stand deeper and making panels the go on each side of the back of the tank to hide the plumbing from the side. Is the overflow box as simple as a 90 with the open end facing up and then a T on the outside of the tank with a vent? I would like to get around 400gph.

Ok, I THINK I have my sump figured out and would like to throw a phosban reactor in to the mix. Please forgive my crude MS paint drawing as it is 3am and I did it quickly. I decided on a center overflow with duroso stand pipe setup. 1" drain and 3/4" return. Please take a look at the image and let me know if I am on the right track or if I am way off. In addition to what I have in the drawing, the phosban reactor will be using barbed fittings for the tubing and will be returned in to the return section of the sump. Also, the bubble catcher is shown on the return side because someone has said they have better results as opposed to it being on the drain side. I will be adding a filter sock or something to the drain, skimmer will also be in that section. Middle will be my fuge and hold my heater. Any input is appreciated.
