STiTCH87's 40g Breeder Starfire Build

That's an awesome build! Did you have to pick up the tank from the GC truck? I think going rimless is the only way to go nowadays.

P.S. If you guys are interested in seeing the Maxspect Razors in person, let me know and I can hook you guys up. I have one of these as well on my display tank. They're a lot more affordable than Radions and put out great color. PM me for more info

Imho there better than any radion ice ever seen. Or at the very least, equal. Less expensive tho!

And no the tank shipped freight to taunton.

When did you get your Maxspect R420r in? I thought I was the only one lol.

Sorry it's been so long since an update, but I had a nightmare of a time with my stupid overflow and plumbing my sump. All is well finally and I have a cerith, astraea, turbo, 2 peppermint, a reef scarlet hermit, 2 red legged hermit, 1 blue legged hermit, and a royal gramma in the tank now along with a small one headed frogspawn and a small ORA Green Toadstool. All doing very well.

NOTE: The giant pencil sharpener-looking powerhead will be replaced by an MP10WES come XMAS and the heater on the right side will be placed into the sump Thursday. I honestly forgot it was in the tank still til I looked at this photo, lol.

The tank is at the dinoflagelate stage to an extent so i'm not gonna do close up photos just yet. Unless anyone requests specific photos, to which i'll gladly take any and all asked. I know someone asked for a picture of my sump, so i'll try to remember thursday to take one.

That is one sweet looking LED fixture!! I would love to see PAR readings it gives at various depths / locations in your tank. I also have a 40 breeder and its time for me to change out my T5 bulbs which will cost me about $130, so I'm considering going LED.

you just got your tank in middle of August and your rocks are purple already?

your tank looks like it's ready for some live stocks (should be ready for hermit crab and snails I believe).

nice tank, and led light. great job

The rocks were already live and woth coraline. I get lucky with coralline growth. Guess I have a purple thumb. Lol. And about five posts up it lists my livestock I have already. You just can't see them in the photos cuz it was near lights out time.

And damn Don those are some good PAR readings! And over the same tank as mine. I guess this light over a 40b is just a match in heaven for everyone. I'll admit like shown in those readings, the ends of the tank do get kinda dim, but that's where the low light corals go. :-)

What type of coral you plan on keeping? Im assuming you have your current softies placed mid level?

The toastool is mid level on the right side in slightly lower light and medium flow. The frogspawn is on the sandbed on the left side in medium flow also but with medium light still because of a rock shadowing it a bit. When it grows it will grow to be accustomed to higher light I'm hoping. Didn't mind it in my pico.

I'm going to be keeping mostly lps but I do want a few sps in there are well as a few softies. But mainly lps.

Nice... so I take it the light output can be dialed down? I keep mixed reef as well, but like you mostly LPS and softies.. I just dont want to be cooking them, ya know?

Great looking tank! I see lots of potential for future corals :)

Do you plan to do any so called open tank show where we could come and see your tank in person
Like to get another similar tank for my turtles
Thanks

Yes the light can be adjusted on the white channel or blue channel by 1% increments and each channel has 6 available set points throughout the day along with a moonlight option.
While I love the available customization in that aspect, one small feature I saw left out, was the ability to have different set points on different days of the week.
I know not many people have a varied light schedule through the week, but for some, like how I used to be, some people I know have their lights timed different on a weekend than a weekday.
I got over it as I realized routine and stabilization was more worth it than me having extra lighted viewing time on weekends.
My light goes as follows:

3:30PM Lights on at 1%

Ramp up gradually to 35% over the next half hour

4:00 Lights are at 35%

Ramp up gradually to 65% over the next half an hour.

4:30 Lights are at 65% and remain there until 10:30PM.

10:30PM Lights dim gradually from 65% down to 0% over the next half an hour and then the blue channel remains at 1% for moonlights from 11PM-5AM.

I would love to be able to do a showing of my tank, but unfortunately it is at my in-laws house which is reason enough for me to avoid having guests over the house as I don't want to be rude or invasive to them.
But also, I have two autistic brother-in-laws that don't exactly enjoy company.

However, at any given point of any day at any time, I am 100% more than welcome to take any pictures or videos of anything involving my tank, or write up any specifications or answer any questions anyone has about it.

If need be I am also capable of webchat where I could do a Live Q&A if enough people got interested, but I don't think my tank will ever become THAT amazing to do so, lol.
Then again, telling by the reactions on here, it seems like many users both new and old really enjoy my tank, and that makes me feel extremely proud and accomplished.

Thank you everyone. =]

Oh btw, KungFuKid, your Inbox is full so I can't reply to you with info about building your sump. =\
But anyways, my sump goes drain and skimmer in left section, 3 baffles spaced 1" apart, return section along with heater, 1 more baffle, then a large refugium. The refugium gets it's water from the return line fed at roughly 75GPH into the refugium that overflows along with the drain section into the return section run at about a 1 inch drop in water height at the return section. Keeps splashing and noise down and everything runs very smoothly.

Picked up these beauties today for an AWESOME price in the last place i'd ever expect to find them.
I have more photos of them posted in their own thread over in the photography section as well.

Not sure if they're ORA or not, but the smaller one is most definitely a Grade A. The larger i'd say is a Grade A Semi-Picasso as one side is completely normal.
From what I understand, according to ORA, they say a Grade A is when the middle bar connects to either the front of back bar (usually the back).
I just LOVE that unique white dot. Whether it will grow to connect to either the back or front bar, we shall see.
I doubt the "normal" side of him will ever abstract markings, but then again anythings possible I suppose.
He may also be a Grade A someday, just a semi. They were purchased already paired up and rub each other ALL day long. They've already started exploring my tank together.
