90 degree.... But everything looks fine. Should I be worried? I just turned on the central a/c to help. If something like this happens again, is it okay to just turn off my reef lighting? Could I add ice? Don't know if that is a silly question.

my tanks currently 85 degrees what can i do to lower that? i have some rodi i can freez then add them to my sump if thats ok to do?

Few suggestions; fan over the surface will help increase evaporation, which creates a cooling effect. Are you running MH lighting? Also what temp do you typically run at, and what is regulating the heater?

Raising up the light a few inches will help cool the air between the fixture and water before it has a chance to absorb; also I dropped my controller temperature from 80 to 78 and today I did not exceeded 81 (last hot day a few weeks back when my controller was keeping the tank at 80 creeped up to Almost 85 which is a little warm for my liking)

There was a thread a few weeks back about chillers. General consensus was that a window unit A/C is more cost effective and efficient, as well as cools your room instead of just the tank. <just food for thought. Your advantage is having central air..... Who doesn't want to enjoy a beautiful 80* day with all the windows open!!

It is also a good idea to fill some 20oz soda bottles 3/4 full of water and just keep them
In your freezer. Float them in the tank if it gets too hot, that will help lower the temp gradually, instead of quickly dropping it. Gradual changes are much better than sudden.

It's not a big deal to go a day or two without lighting to help lower temp.
So reef gurus actually advocate doing it.As weather over reefs is not always a bright sunny day.
Often times it helps keep the sand bed looking nice and white.

all my tanks are in the basement. This morning I checked, all heaters are still on to keep the temp up. My basement hit 68F yearterday while outside was close to 90F.

If everything looks fine, you should be okay. I would not add ice, but like others have suggested, keeping some frozen bottles of RODI is a good idea. Keeping the lights off for short periods is not going to harm anything.

Evaporated cooling with a fan is pretty effective IME and this is my method if my tank gets too hot.

Especially if you have MH, having a controller that can automatically cut the lights at a certain temp can be a real life saver. All it takes is one unexpectedly hot day while you're at work...

Hit 84 Yesterday in my tank was Toooooo hot for my liking Made the decision to shut of the lights and put a fan blowing towards the surface of the tank, also opened up the doors to the stand to get some air to where the sump is. Usually not a problem for me during summer as we have the AC in the windows but they are not up yet its only April!! LOL 90 is hot though!!! carefull IME I would not let it get that hot again be on top of it if you know you we have a hot day ahead. Good Luck

This is what made me buy a chiller. I know a lot of people would understandably rather A/C the room, but my tank is in the living room and I want to open the windows and enjoy the weather on those warmer days! It is expensive and puts out heat, but it has worked like a charm for me. My frag tank in my bedroom relies on the room A/C though - so whichever works for you.

During hot summer months I usually change my photoperiod to a cooler part of the day basically starting late afternoon and I shorten it too. I have one tank in the family room with no a/c so I set up a small fan to blow over the surface of the water. For the tank in the bedroom I set a timer on the a/c to go on for an hour or so during the hottest part of the day.

I got this wonderful 24,000 btu chiller on my deck. House stays a comfy 75° in the summer and 68° in the winter and tank steady 78° 24/7 all year.
