Tank Stand and Canopy Advice

Looking to get a really nice-looking, (probably) new cabinet and canopy for a 125 gallon tank. I realize that the prices on the new cabinets are INSANELY overpriced, but I'm a perfectionist w/ appearance and can't settle for an old, worn stand/canopy, and the "homemade" ones never seem to look as sharp.

My question is, do any of you have any experience with the R&J Enterprises lines? Thinking of getting the "Black Oak Empire" Line (since it's the least insanely expensive, ha) and would love to hear any and all thoughts/experiences with these stands, pro or con.

Thanks for all of your help!

I looked at them when I was getting mine. They are not bad but not super high quality and I didn't like the way the top worked. Tropic isle has some of them on display last time I looked. I ended up having Jim (calciumbuf) build mine for me and its absolutely perfect, guy is an artist with woodworking.

No experience, sorry. But in case you didn't know, Petco.com has R&J enterprises cabinets on sale.

^ this.

I've seen some pictures of Jim's work here and it's quality. I got to see PSU4ME's tank/stand this past weekend, and it is absolutly phenominal.

Heading to NYC next weekend and will detour to see the Aqua Vim product at Fishtown USA. It's supposed to be really good high end furniture quality. Also getting a quote on 8020 framing on which I could mount cabinet quality raised panel doors. They would have to be custom made to get the right size I expect so no idea yet on cost. I did see a cabinet at Tropic Isle that I think was the R&J, in natural finish, that was still boxed waiting for the install, and it looked pretty good.

There are a couple people on here that can build you a custom.

Here is my old 125 setup with a stand I built

Thanks to everybody who responded, I really appreciate it.
- PSU4ME: I sent a PM to Jim but haven't heard back so far.
- JoelA: I would leave to hear more about what you find with the Aqua Vim and 8020s.
- Jayinh: gorgeous stand/canopy, would like to hear more about a deal that we could work out if you're interested.

To any and all stand/canopy-builders out there, please let me know if you're willing to sell me a stand you can build for a 125!

Oh and CAPSLOCK: thanks for the heads up on Petco, that's where I was looking to buy the R&J line from, but holding off for now while I continue to explore other options.

Jayinh - very nice custom stand

I searched everywhere to get a custom stand and it was very hard to find what I wanted and someone to build it. I bought the Skyline Maple Xtreme from R&J for a 65g setup. I bought the canopy as well with piano top lid and also front opening dual doors for feeding. I paid extra for the option to have 2 open front bottom doors. Most of the back is open on the base stand which makes it easy to run electronics etc.
The molding is nice and the dark stain looks great. (I got the darkest that was not black and maple wood which has fewer grains than pine.
Very nice looking, seems sturdy enough (not tons of 2x4 like custom might have and would weigh a ton), bit expensive. I think mine was around $950-1000 range from Fish Tanks Direct. You cannot order directly from R&J unless you are a fish store or online company. Several distributors can order what you want. Also you can even get wood samples from them to see stains and they will custom build extra doors or whatever you want.
I have had mine for about 9-10 months.

If you order on line it comes direct from R&J. Make sure you open it while the delivery truck is there. The first one that came was broken and had a fork lift hole right thru the box. I took pics and called company and was told to refuse order. They resent new cabinet about 3-4 weeks later.
Happy so far.
If I can figure out easily on my ipad how to down covert pic files, I will try to add some pics.

Hi guys, wanted to revisit the whole custom stand/canopy build for my 125 gallon I'm setting up. I initially worked through the whole process and committed to having Jay (jayinh) build it for me, but the build kept getting pushed back due to him being busy and now I haven't heard back from him for the past couple months, so wanted to start looking again at other options if Jay ends up backing out of our agreement (just PM'd him today to check in). I spoke with Jim (Calciumbuf) a while back - great guy and he clearly builds gorgeous stands, but his cheapest available stand/canopy was looking like $1200+, which is out of my price range for sure. Any ideas, suggestions, or people who want to make some money building this? Thanks to everybody in advance. Take it easy, Josh

Have you ever considered just getting a stand but then doing the canopy from kitchen cabinet?
Just a thought.

Yeah, I've thought about workarounds and ways to get creative with a build but at the end of the day, I am pretty OCD and want the finished product to look pristine - I want it to end up being the nicest piece of furniture in my house. Buying a stand from one place and then trying to mix-and-match with other pieces, etc. can look decent, but never perfect to me. Definitely want to go with a matching, identical style/wood/finish stand and canopy. I've looked at the R&J Enterprises lines, etc., but they're way overpriced for the quality that you actually get, and I'd rather work with somebody local that I trust, so that I get a nicer finished product and they can make some money as well. Jay's custom build looked good but then I stopped hearing back from him, and Jim's was looking like it'd cost $1500 or so, which is twice what I can spend.

Honestly,$1500 doesn't sound all that bad for a nice stand and canopy.
Especially if you're looking for something that is extraordinary in quality.
I've seen a couple of calciumbuff's pieces pictured here on the site.
And they were ::

I was thinking maybe a place like Naylors kitchen and bath might be able to do custom work.
I'm bored so just shooting around ideas.

Pristine on a budget looks like you need to adjust your idea of pristine. $750=prefab stand not pristine custom stand

I want it to end up being the nicest piece of furniture in my house. ........

How much did you pay for the next nicest piece of furniture you have?

Matisse and Stradivarius cost a little more than peanuts unless you happen to find one in the recycling bin.

Just to put this in perspective; a "wedding haircut" is upwards of 200$ and that is about 45 min of work if the hairdresser is actually paying attention to the smallest of details. Building a furniture grade finish stand and canopy is at least day worth of work regardless of how proficient you are, and it involves a little more tooling than a pair of scissors, not to talk about wood itself.

I understand what the naysayers are trying to get at, but I'll keep proving everybody wrong like I always do :)

- delta: maybe you misinterpreted the word "pristine." I said I wanted "the finished product to look pristine." All that word means is that something is in it's original condition, unused, unspoiled, clean, fresh, in good shape, uncorrupted, etc. It doesn't have anything to do with prefab vs. custom or the quality of original appearance, craftsmanship, etc. And while I'm not looking to go well beyond that monetary figure, I do have some wiggle room. The "nicest piece of furniture in my house" thing may have been a bit of an exaggeration. Plus, we are pretty broke and don't have any valuable stuff in our place anyway! It's all relative, ha.

- ro_nicu: I appreciate your references to egregiously (hilariously) overpriced art and to a wedding haircut, but I feel that you actually helped to supply greater wind to the sails of my approach. Before my wedding, I went to my usual barber, to whom I usually pay about $15 per haircut. When she discovered I was about to be married, she did it for free (and I gave her a very large tip in a gesture of reciprocity, of course). I could have told other people I paid $190, and they wouldn't have been the wiser. Another example: years ago in college, on a vacation, my friends and I filled a few empty bottles of Cristal (go for $200+ per bottle) with cheap $10 champagne and served it to the crowd we were partying with. We could not count the number of times people were using superlatives for how amazing the Cristal tasted and how it was the best drink they'd ever tasted, etc. This is akin to the Two-Buck Chuck social experiment, etc., etc., etc. I would never, ever pay anywhere near $200 for a haircut and the 45 mins. of work you refer to. I work 80-100+ hours per week and commute 2 hrs. round trip per day, so I certainly appreciate the value of a full day's work and of quality craftsmanship. I grew up doing many woodworking and "handyman" projects with my father and my grandfather, so I am not hopeless with woodworking projects, but I do have the appropriate belief that somebody with a carpentry/cabinetmaker background will do a much more efficient and higher quality job than I could ever accomplish on the build. We certainly do get what we pay for - but the world is also filled with overpriced, crappy deals that you have to wade through in order to find the gems.

At the end of the day, I was just trying to send out feelers re: possible avenues I could take to get a reasonably-priced, nice stand/canopy for a 125 gallon tank. I understand and appreciate the points made here and I don't have an absolute fixed price point or design in mind. I would just like to end up with a nice-looking stand and canopy, that will reliably hold the immense weight it is built to support, while not quite costing me the equivalent of a used automobile :D Thanks again for the responses and I hope everybody had a nice weekend!

Anybody with experience with the oak stands/canopies from Glasscages? Could get the stand and canopy combined for only around $700-800+ and do a really nice black paint job myself... Thoughts?

...Or the R&J Enterprises Groove Series - new through Drs. Foster and Smith. Portion of build uses plywood, but if I waited until one of their 10-20% off sales, I could have it delivered for $740-820.

What, $740-820 for part plywood and press board? You can have a craftsman build one that's nice for $1000
