Terrible experience at Aquarium Gallery - Hudson, NH

This past Thursday I stopped by Aquarium Gallery in Hudson, NH. While I was browsing around I saw a nice Flame Angel for sale and thought it would look great in my tank. I asked for the pice and it was 60.00. It was a bit over priced but I decided that it would be worth it anyway. I got an associate to bag up the fish for me. He netted the fish and then put him in the bag. I got home and acclimated the fish. I placed him in the tank and as soon as he was in the water I noticed that he had "popeye." I did some research and posted about popeye and found out that one of the causes is being netted. To me this is the most likely cause since he did not have it before he was netted. I wanted to see if there was any way that I would be able to return the fish back to the store so I called the store the next day when they opened. I spoke with an employee named Mike. I asked him what I should do about this and he told me that I could bring the fish back in. The next day I spent an hour taking out all of my live rock and corals so that i would easily be able to catch the fish, bag him up and bring him back to Aquarium Gallery. I got to Aquarium Gallery and spoke with a blonde guy who I assume was some type of manager. I explained him the situation and that I had spoken to Mike. He took the bag and walked over to one of his tanks and then floated the fish in the water. He then poceeded to say "Alright well you can square it up with Mike on Tuesday." I was very confused from this statement becuase I thought I was bringing the fish back and getting store credit or my money back or something. He then said that our policiy is displayed on the wall. I explained to him that his employee told me that I could bring the fish back. The reason I called a couple of days before was to ask the employee what the policy would be for this situation. If the employee had told me that there was nothing that I could do and that I would not be able to bring him back then I wouldnt have wasted all of my time doing so. I asked the manger if he was willing to do anything at all and he did not. He then accused me of doing the damage to the fish and was extremely rude to me. At this point i grabbed the fish and brought him back home. On my way out the door I asked him one more time if was willing to do anything to make this right. He said no. I told him that he would be loosing out on a customer and he proceeded to say "I understand that. That's fine." The reason I am so upset about the situation is becuase I called to find out, I was told I could bring it back, I brought the fish back, and I was treated like crap. The manager did not stand by his emplyee or even care about the trouble I went through. I am completely shocked at the way I was treatd in there. In my opinion based on my experience their customer service is horrible and non existant.

The Flame Angel isn't doing too well. His eye still hasn't cleared up and he isnt eating. I put some nori in last night hoping that he would pick at it today. I really hope I can get him to start eating.

I didn't buy a fish with popeye. When i saw him in their tank he did not have it. I wouldnt have bought the fish if i knew he was damaged or sick, especially at that price. The fish was damaged when he was netted. I did not use a net to put the fish in my tank. I used my specimin container. I bought the fish thinking that it would be in the same condition as it was when I saw him in their tank. When i got home I found out that he was not.
You bought a fish with popeye? If you didn't see it in the store, isn't it likely that it developed during the trip or in your tank?

Which employee netted the fish? I have bought lot of fish there and they always use a specimen cup to capture the fish. This method is recommended by most LFS.

I too have never had a net taken out there.

A number of posts were removed because they were not first hand experiences - but rather they were discussion. This forum's rules state that only first hand experiences can be posted here.

Thanks.

That's all fine and well but I want to make sure the information is accurate. I was there with Myk on Thursday night and it certainly wasn't my first night there.

Just getting the facts straight is all.

So maybe we can all get on track and see if we can help get this fish well again.

I bought a mystery wrasse a little over a week ago there (beautiful btw!), and it was caught with nets, pulled out the water, and then dumped about a foot into the bag... fortunately he is still healthy, but I admit I was shocked to see nets being used.

Forum rules...
http://www.bostonreefers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=19839
"All existing forum rules from the user agreement will apply here. In addition to the existing rules we would like to point out that this forum is for civil discussion of all and any vendor experience. The forum is not limited to sponsors."

I am confused, the rules state the forum is for civil discussion, yet you removed post that were discussion. Forgive me if I am in the wrong, just trying to understand why discussion was removed. Maybe the VE forum rules need to be updated if discussion is not to occur.

Also from the rules...
"GENERAL:
This forum is not a battle ground. We will not tolerate "flaming" or "bashing" of any kind, from any party, be it member or vendor. Any such discussion shall be removed immediately and a warning given. Continued "flaming" or "bashing" shall result in suspension and/or banning of posting privileges. Experience discussed here is limited to personal experience only. Discussion of others experience will be removed immediately."

These two sections in the rules confuse me, first says discussion, the second say discussion is not allowed and will be removed. Once again, I am just trying to clarify for myself and maybe other that might be confused.

You are correct, Barry.
We used to have those "first hand experience only" rules stated somewhere. I can't find it now. We'll update that sticky you linked to. Thanks for pointing it out.

Wow! This is a very bad experience indeed:( I'd like to do my best here and try to get things on track and ultimately fix this problem if I can.

First, I need to address the issue of the nets. I have been a hobbyist for over 20 years and have worked in the aquarium industry for over 14. Throughout this time I have netted tens of thousands (maybe even more:)) of fish and seen co-workers and other aquarium industry folks net tens of thousands more. It is safe to say that any given fish will have passed through many nets from the time that they are collected from the reef, transferred, shipped to wholesale and then sold to stores for resale. I am confident that the nets of The Aquarium Gallery will not do any more damage than the others. Disease and/or injury are caused by disease and/or injury.

With that said, I would like to get back to the matter of dvasq8385's bad experience at the store. I did speak with you over the phone in regards to the issue with the Flame Angel and given that I was aware of the fish being a new arrival to the store I made my decision based on that fact to suggest that the fish be removed to be treated and that if that option did not work to return the fish to the store. The general policy on livestock at the store is that there are no returns on livestock and I must follow this policy. By asking you to return the fish to the store in the event that a hospital tank was not an option I broke policy and I was spoken to over this matter. I take full responsibility for your bad experience at the store and for your inconvenience in dismantling your aquarium aquascape to remove the fish. I am unable to offer you a credit through the store for this fish, but would like to offer to pay you for the fish myself in exchange for the Flame Angel. If the fish expires before I can take care of this I would ask that you freeze it and save it for me so that I can send it out for testing at the lab to see what caused the problem. This is certainly of value to me.

I offer my apologies to you in this situation. I value you and all of my customers at The Aquarium Gallery and hope that we are able to resolve this matter. Feel free to contact me at any time. I will be on the road a couple days this week doing installations, so if you can't reach me directly just leave a message for me and I will get back to you when I am in the store.

Thank You,
Myk.

...I was aware of the fish being a new arrival to the store

From last December:
Our biggest edition will be the one you can't see. We are setting up a 10 tank quarantine system behind the scenes. NO FISH WILL BE PUT DIRECTLY INTO THE FISH SYSTEM WITHOUT PROPER INSPECTION, AND HEALTH CHECK! When you buy a fish from us you will feel safe knowing that the Marine Animal has been in the store at least two weeks, eats great, and is pest free. Also we will have a frag grow out area in that room also to help farm our own corals.

In my experience I have not seen a quarantine system, and from the posts advertising newly arrived stock it sounds like fish are going straight to sales tanks. I could be wrong. Did this plan get cut?

No the plan has not been cut. Unfortunately, this has not been completed yet. I'm waiting on the tanks to install the system.

Smithcreek thanks for your observation and I can assure you that this plan has not been scrapped at all. The first of the QT systems has been put in place and we continue to strive to offer the best livestock in the area.

As anything else in this hobby/industry setting up new systems is a long arduous process and requires a ton of patience. We are hoping to have the rest of our QT systems in place over the next weeks/months. I don't know of any other LFS in this area that has any form of QT for new arrivals. They're always placed on the selling floor right away.

We're moving away from this practice but it does take time. I hope this helps clear up any concerns.
