To Shut Down or Not to Shut Down. That is the Question.

One more thing to check is the magnets holding wavemakers, pumps etc

Just a random thought, do you run activated carbon? I have noticed that when I run carbon, it seems to adsorb trace elements out of the water, and my corals will bleach. But that's my anecdotal experience, not much of a scientific basis. Any of that can probably be ruled out with a large water change like Dong suggested, which should replenish most of it.
I don't run carbon very often and am not running any currently.. Good thought though. Thank you.

The only thing with a magnet in my tank that is not relatively new is the algae clip. I'll have to check it out. I know you don't care for ICP tests but theoretically, wouldn't some sort of heavy metal show up on ICP?

If ICP is done according academic standards, yes, which is labor intensive and will cost 8 to 10x more.
