Using Algae reactor for pod breeding?

I would like a mandarin and don’t want to use a HOB refugium on the back of my 54 corner reef. Incorporating a refugium into my basement sump is a possibility but was looking for a gravity feed design rather than having the pods go through an impeller before entering the display. Feeding a algae reactor from my return line directly back into my tank is my latest thought.

I’ve never used a reactor and was wondering, if placing some rubble on the bottom before filling with pods would create an ideal breeding ground.

Thanks for any advice!

Don’t worry about the impeller. They are going to make it into the display.

Just use your sump.

That’s what I have read. Thanks Nick I guess I’ll just turn my RO top off chamber into a refugium.
Have a great weekend!

Easiest method with out any expensive equipment would be a gallon container with phyto. Use a sieve to grab some of your culture and be done. Also a better way knowing what you put in your tank. GL

Agreed about not worrying about the impeller on the pumps. I've had nudibranches make it through the impeller!

My springeri damsels became territorial so I sumped all three, the next morning one was back in the display unscathed.

Slightly different question: I'm setting up a diy algae reactor with a phosban reactor. Is there any reason it wouldn't be as good of a pod breeding environment as a regular refugium?
