very bad morning

For some reason when I woke up this maornign I did not feel like going to work, had a little headache and was sore, also just lazy. Was working in my office (right off my fish room) and did not notice anything. Then decided to make some water adn do a water change. Looked at my tank and the water was down about 7" !!!!!!!!!!!! WTF??? Took a few minutes to figure out but what happend was i have a battery operated air pump hooke up and velcroed to the wall behind the tank, it fell off and instead of pulling the airstone out of the tank it pulled the airhose off at the pump. This started a siphon and drained my tank!! Frickin 1/4" hose!! It also got some of the electrical wet( the hose was right above my GFI and they were soaked) Thank god for GFIS or else my heater and pheads etc would have blown. I have things poretty well cleaned up and starting to put things back together. Had 5 gallons of water made up and put this right in, making more now( boy those RODIs are slow when you really need it!) I have 3 airpumps going. Moved any corals that were above the water down. Funny thing is there was not much water on the floor, went down the first floor and can see no water coming through the ceiling. When I went to the basement there is quite a bit of water down there, must be going down the wall. Better than the 1st floor!
I suppose it would have been a lot worse if I went to work but still waht a pain in the @@@. Wish me luck.

Ahh....bummer. Glad you caught it before it got any worse.

Good luck!

Ouch, gotta love those surprises 1st think in the AM, NOT good at any time, but it is a good thing you were home!

I thought I had a slow leak in my sump couple months ago, it sits in a rubbermaid container that's about 4" high. Found 2" of water in it and thought, oh crap guess I need to dismantle the sump and find out where the leak is. Luckily, before I took everything offline to drain the sump I found out what the problem was. I use a women's L'Eggs knee high for carbon and the end part was hanging over the side allowing the water to conveniently siphon the water out of the sump into the container. Whew close call.

Good luck Dana...

WOW that su@ks. I think you should dump the velcro thing. What I use is a small pump shelf that hangs on the back or the tank. You can pick them up at most LFS and they are cheep.

hehe i dont know how many times my fish tank made me sick so I couldnt goto work !

;)

whew, I got everything cleaned up except the water that keeps seeping out from under my stand. I put 10 gallons back in the tank, seems like another 20 to go. Boy RODI takes a long time!! Got all the electrical cleaned up, even rerouted everything and put in drip loops which I have been meaning to do anyways. Yup the velcro is gone!! I have enough water in that I was able to turn on 2 PH's and the heater so I think everyting should do ok. Seems like it might turn into a very aggravating very large very hurried water change :-). Thank god I did not go to work!! Not only woudl I have no more tank but I would be looking for a new place to live after the Landlord( my Brother) kicked me out!!

Thanks for the support and letting me vent!

Dana

Next time I don't want to go to work, I'll know it's fate. :)

FYI..

Airline check valves are like $0.79..

BTDT know the pain..

I had one of my quick disconnects on my Fluval start leaking.. took about 25g into the rug.. god bless the shop vac!

Never knew they made them, Gonna go out today and get some.

almost back to normal. 20 gallons put back, seems like 5 to go. Boy does RODI take along time !! Seems like everything is looking good fish and corals seem fine. On the bright side I got the tank, stand and fish room cleaned and organized. Also calibrated my PH monitor and other small things Ive been meaning to do. Guess it could have been worse.

Thanks

Maybe you tatnk was telling you to do a big water change? Sometimes tanks do things like that. Posideon must have been mad at you..

Now that you mention it the tank looks awesome today. Every coral looks better than they have in a while. Maybe it was time for a big water change. Wish it wasn't forced but those things happen I guess.
