A fellow reefer and I just bought a zoa colony. Thanks to safe reef practice I saved my tank from a very nasty pest, NUDI. While dipping a nudi fell off. This is my first time I've seen a nudi in person. Called the other reefer and lucky he's still dripping.

The question is how long should I but this colony in QT until it's safe to go into the main tank?

nudi

From what I understand nudies can be helpfull(getting ride of aptasia) but other times just a pest!!kind of a p.i.t.a. all in all!:D

did you get any pics of your pest?

Yeah but I have a crappy picture and it doesn't show very well.

zoa nudis and others will not survive a fresh water bath ..
with zoas the best practice is a fresh water bath followed by a peroxide and fresh water bath this will normally kill off any pest and fungus

you may want to scrape off any eggs that may or could be laid on the zoa's

not to my knowledge but you should actually be able to see them. run a toothpick around each individual polyp and that usually scrapes them off.

What do you guys use to formulate a peroxide bath?

I can't remember for peroxide But i know betadine will kill nudis and not harm zoos and zoas.

The mixture is 1ml per liter, however I have gone as far as dipping zoas in 8ml per 4 cups(almost 4L) and they were fine, nudis weren't.

1/2 hour for the betadine dip.

BTW I don't know if i need to tell you this but just because your not dipping SPS doesn't mean you shouldnt be dipping in interceptor. Redbugs can come in on anything as i recently found out. The zoas are not affected by that either, in fact some of mine have opened while being dipped.

where can u buy betadine and interceptor?

Betadine can be found in any CVS store, interceptor is a prescription drug for dogs......however it can be ordered online without a prescription with some luck....or you can post in the WTB section, usually someone is willing to spare some.

I will personally warn that dipping acropora's in betadine is risky, there are other solutions to betadine. I have never had a problem with anything else however.

Usually how long should zoas be in a QT before I know for sure that's it's safe to go into the main tank? How long does it takes for nudi eggs to hatch and die out assuming there is not food source, ie zoas.

The peroxide dip is 1 part peroxide to 10 parts water. I agree with Dawn on the type of treatment she's suggested (freshwater then peroxide dip).

Does fresh water = RODI, or tap? Is there a pre-treatment thread for soft corals? Seems like it would make a good sticky.

I know there are threads for acros and other SPS, etc, but how about one for us LPS/zoa people?

Reading these threads recently have scared the crap out of me. Methinks I need to amp up my acclimation/dip/QT husbandry on my zoas......

couple questions, how long are these dips each, and like chew said, if you buy a bunch of zoos on a piece of live rock, how would you eradicate any redbugs that may have been on the rock itself. Does that mean that you would have to do a freshwater dip followed by a peroxide dip, followed by an interceptor/betadine dip. Sounds like a stressful day for a zoa

Jay, I would highly recommend dipping new corals. Think of all the money we put into these tanks and have them disappear because of laziness or carelessness. Don't trust anyone with your tank. Also to QT all new corals for a period of time. How long to QT them I'm still looking for suggestions.
