vortech vs new gyre

(BadPapi)
I'm in the market for a new power head and always want to give a gyre a try but never have yet .
the new gyre the came out is really sweet looking and have the new controller to add another gyre on the future without buying a whole unit .
by example you can get a gyre /xf230 for $289.99 http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/xf230-gyre-pump-with-controller-2300-gph-maxspect.html
and later on if needed add another XF230 Gyre Pump Only for $ 139.99 http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/xf230-gyre-pump-only-2300-gph-maxspect.html
so for $ 429.98 you have two very good and powerful pumps .

compare to the let s say the smaller VorTech MP10wQD QuietDrive wich retail for about $285.00 a unit give or take .

again i have many vortech pumps in the pass and running a VorTech MP10wQD on my 20 nuvo .

but thinking more to only run one pump on my IM sr-60 nuvo . and i think with the gyre i will only need one intead of 2 mp-10 or 1 mp-40.

Gyre xf-230
Flow Rate - up to 2300 GPH
Power Consumption - 8w - 35w
Cable Length - 10 ft (controller to pump)
Min Aquarium Volume - 20 Gallons
Max Aquarium Volume - 100+ Gallons*

vortech
Pump Wireless Communication? Maximum Flow Rate Tank Size Maxiumum Tank Pane Thickness Power Consumption
MP10wQD Yes 1,500+ GPH 2.5 to 50+ gallons 0.375 inches (9.5mm) 8 to 18 watts
MP40wQD Yes 4,500+ GPH 50 to 500+ gallons 0.75 inches (19mm) 9 to 38 watts
MP60wQD Yes 7,500+ GPH 120 to 1,000+ gallons 0.375 to 1.00 inches (9.5 to 26mm) 10 to 60 watts

any thoughts or input on this will be appreciated .

I think the older Gyre xf150 is a better option. Same price as the xf230, more than double the max flow.
Why pay more for software control that may not be matter at all.

Just for functionality, I will get a Jebao cross flow pump, cheap and functional.

Mp40qd I just upgraded from mp40wes and wow the qd is a nice pump. I had my two mp40wes maxed out now I can only run the qd a little over half way and zero sound

QD Mp pumps are great.
I upgraded two MP40 to QD wet sides only, I get more flow and less noise.

I used gyre and not impressed at all. First, it does not eliminate dead spot. Theoretically and practically impossible. Well, unless the tank is empty, which was how they did demo of gyre anyway.

Second, it does not move a thin sheet of water, the flow pattern widen quickly.

Third, it is way too complicated with so many moving parts.

I have one of each in my tank plus 2 RW 20 no matter what you need more than one. Depending on rock work

Very true, it depends on rock work. As far as dealing with dead spot, I found Tunze wave box do a little better job by rocking the whole water volume. The wave that wave box generates is quite different than using just power head in pulse mode.

Also, gyre won't work on shallow tank very well. I tried it in my 12 inch deep frag tank and the suppose thin sheet of water was not that thin after all, it blow frags everywhere

Sorry little late to jump in here but I might be of some help as I currently run 2 mp40 QD and a xf150 gyre first gen. The mp40 QD are amazing at creating random flow through the tank and can ramp up and down automatically depending on the setting they are in. The gyre it great at moving walls of water. It moves great amounts of water and you will be able to see the flow through the tank but it always runs at the same speed and is not as customizable. Hope that my two cents helps and gives you more insight into the two different pumps.

The new generation of Gyre is getting there in terms of cost.

thanks for the input .
I do run a mp1- qd in my 20 now. but to be honest I don't never change the settings from where they are .
so they run constantly on the same speed all day .
only feed time I shut off for lets say ten minutes and turn back on again.
so all this custom setting gets to confusing for me .

Jebao cp40 has major motor reliability problems in my tank. If you enjoy waiting weeks for them to send a replacement, then you can save a buck. Penny wise pound foolish. Gyre is also not as reliable as mp pumps

Agreed. My Gyree XF150 is on its 3rd controller. While CoralVue has been great to deal with, there is no reason something should be breaking that frequently.

I use a single Gyre XF150 on my 60"x24"x24" tank. I'm running it with the Icecap interface module so that I can control it with the Apex. It moves a lot of water and I get a pretty decent bounce off the far wall but I'm still thinking I need another pump of some sort for the other side just to get more randomness to the flow. I've set up the program for the Gyre so that it pulses in both direction and speed but the Gyre's reverse mode is very weak compared to normal mode.

I had a problem where it would occasionally hang if I programmed it to reverse (or even just to stop). Coralvue tech support sent me a new Icecap module and it's been working fine since then.

In my 150g display i run 2 mp40s and a gen 1 gyre 150. In my 7 foot 12 inch deep frag tank i run 1 new maxspect and I'm pretty happy with both setups.

The gen 2 maxspects have some parts beefed up. The gen 1s lose a lot of power due to weak link plastic parts that start to slip. It's the one part they don't give you extra ones of too. They are cheap and once i picked up extras of those i had no issue with the gyre. I would favor the new ones over used old ones though.

If i had to choose for my DT ib would go with 2 vortechs over a gyre. If you are buying only 1 pump or money is an issue is go gyre.
