Water and topoff water issues for MWRA customers

Is the algae gone yet?

yeah I heard... did it just break today? or did it break last night It didn't say on the site made fresh water last night

Are we sure it ruins the filter?

Seems strange that the bacteria would be able to get through the filter.

This happened in our area a few yrs. back.It was geese droppings and ecoli in our case.
Be prepared for a large surge of chlorine to be sent through the system.
It's best to just leave your ro/di systems off for now.
How far West has this problem effected?Best bet would be to take a ride and pick up Walmart ot wholesale club bottled water.

I am not sure that it ruins the filters, but I am also not sure if it's safe to use.

I have read through the MWRA website, and there is not one place I have found that says the main water source is filtered for sediment. In fact, there is a section on their website that describes the treatment process. It says:

1) Ozone is added
2) Chloramine is added
3) pH is adjusted using sodium bicarbonate and CO2
4) Fluoride is added

The reserve water does not have sediment filtration or chemical treatment. The main source does not appear to have sediment filtering either.

The fact that the reserve system does not have chemical treatment to kill bacteria is the reason for the boil water order. If the RO/DI systems do not remove bacteria, that is the only concern for our tanks.

Since neither system appears to have sediment filtration, this would have NO effect on your RO filters.

No Choice!

There is really no choice here except to turn off the top of system. But if the salinity rises above 1.027 or so you have no choice unless you buy RODI water or steam distilled.

I was asking if the RODI filter is effective against the E-Coli. I have many spare filters, including a spare membrane, and so for me, burning out the filter is not a much as an issue as keeping my water at the right levels.

Does anyone know how effective the RODI is and how long it would last?

uhh,
Pls see above

Good luck guys I'd shut down your rodi systems just to be safe and buy a bunch of rodi from a lfs just to be safe.

The news said do not use water in fish tanks. I feel thats the fishtank gods speaking to me.;) Im not using it.

Lets see, I wonder what the going price would be for 5 Gal's of RO/DI water? Now add a few hundred percent because of the crisis, I could make some good money in a short time :D

But seriously, I live in lunenburg which is not effected by this (At least I am not on the list), and work in Waltham. If someone is in real need of water I can truck several 5 Gal buckets to waltham with me.

I have 100gal for the fish, but the kids are screwed;)

Jay, what do you mean here? Will the E-coli ruin/foul RO membranes or will it quickly deplete DI cartridges, or both?

Since the backup source is not sediment filtered, it is going to have way higher sediment and TDS levels...which will clog your first filters, foul your RO membrane, and burn through DI. Think of it as the untreated lake water it is....

Also, since it hasn't been treated, bacteria may get through, and it can't be guaranteed safe to drink...if you just use the RODI filter.

Bad news for all. If anyone is in a bind, PM me. I have plenty of RODI, and southborough is west of the bad water zone.

EDIT: We can also provide some of the club's Nutri-sea if you're REALLY in a bind, but you'll need to pay for that.
