Water main breaks boil water issued in Boston and 30 communities

It occurred at ten am I personally wouldn't risk it..... Don't drink or use for cooking unless boiled first

If you are running it through an RO unit and it reads 0 TDS wouldn't it be safe to use? What are people doing who have ATO units connected directly to the tank doing?

Personally with a level of ZERO I see it being fine to use, just my .02.

I thought the same thing except I am not sure if the RO/DI removes all the bacteria in the water.

So is RO/DI water safe w/ the main break?

Just thinking, if this thing goes on for a week or so might be a good justification to invest in one.

From wiki:

. In practice, a fraction of the living bacteria can and do pass through RO membranes through minor imperfections, or bypass the membrane entirely through tiny leaks in surrounding seals. Thus, complete RO systems may include additional water treatment stages that use ultraviolet light or ozone to prevent microbiological contamination.

RO/DI units are a great investment for your reef tank, now and long term. :)

hmm, i wonder how safe a UV sterilizer would be in terms of making tap water drinkable?

If you can't boil water, you can disinfect it using household bleach. Bleach will kill some, but not all, types of disease-causing organisms that may be in the water. If the water is cloudy, filter it through clean cloths or allow it to settle, and draw off the clear water for disinfection. Add 1/8 teaspoon (or 8 drops) of regular, unscented, liquid household bleach for each gallon of water, stir it well and let it stand for 30 minutes before you use it. Store disinfected water in clean containers with covers.
